The same guy fitted the kitchen. Its a mess. Another joiner is coming to redo it. New benches etc. The guy tiled but didnt even fix the benches, there on the **** anyway. View attachment 100147 View attachment 100149

This is the result I got for a bathroom refurb. Tiling took 8 working days from 19-28 Feb. He said his cutting machine kept breaking because my tiles were 'good'. He enquired about why his machine was breaking at his trade store. He also tried to invoice me for 15m sq, when he decided to only do 2 walls (I had asked for all walls half-tiled). Aside from him lying about how many walls we agreed, and lying about the amount of tiles on my walls, is this a professional standard? Will I have issues with leaking through this cracking and patchy grout or tiles cracking or falling off?

It’s hard to tell, you have some cracked and missing grout and a few chipped cuts but wider view photos would help see the bigger picture.

Hi all, here is what I found... Pool is been done only 5-6 years ago. Looks like only grout holds them together.

The adhesive doesn't look too clever either.

Few emails later getting the fitters method statement.

No, they have cracks because your "professional bathroom fitter" (turns out he's a general builder) has tiled a shower, without tanking, onto plywood!


Waiting for further images when the tiles are taken down.... or fall off!

"Your bathroom hasn’t been tanked, nor does it need to be, it’s not a wet room, we have used 18mm marine ply as a base, screwed in every 6 inches with 40mm wood screws, flexible adhesive (Mapai)

Flexible grout (mapai), corners and joints have been sealed with dowsil 791 flexible translucent Silicon before application of adhesive, we used a 6mm notched trowel."

I guess it must be. Better get in touch with the factory and tell them to stop making tiles as an issue has been spotted by a builder. She has 5 more like that dotted around the base that she hasn't sent photos of. I've told her it should be condemned on safety grounds and there is no fix other than a full rebuild of the cubicle. Strangely enough, still not had any response from her or the builder yet.

As for marine ply or WPB, these days that don't mean shi....taki mushrooms. Wood + Water = Pop. Plain and simple. They haven't removed it from the standards for no reason.

remember what was said regarding tiling on plywood.
One of my students was asking about why we use SBR & Acrylic primers instead of PVA so as i always confuse the the wording with SBR they googled it underneath the quote below these were a couple of the questions there.
SBR Bonding Agent. Construction Chemicals SBR is a white styrene butadiene co-polymer used to improve the properties of cement renders, screeds and mortars. Itis also used in conjunction with Construction Chemicals Tanking Slurry as a priming coat or tight render base coat.

Can I Tile to Plywood on a Wall? While some types of plywood can be used in certain types of tile installations, use of the material has limitations. ... For wall installations, your real concerns are whether you want to use thin set directly on the wood and whether you are using an exterior or interior type of plywood.
Do I need to prime plywood before tiling?
The plywood surface will then be the surface to be tiled. ... So your nice new clean ply floor isn't so clean anymore and if it's not prepared properly prior to tiling, the adhesive will just go onto the dirt on the floor and might not stick! This is why it is better to prime it than not to
