First tiling job after my course with UKPTT

Hi guys,

I'm currently on my first job after finishing the 9 day course with UK Pro Tiling Training, which I must add was absolutely brilliant!!!

So after removing the 7m2 area of mosaic tiles the plaster behind the tiles just crumbled off the wall due to previous leaks.

I'm thinking of dot n dabbing some Knauff Aquaboard to the brick walls. Can anyone tell me if there is a better idea?

I'm only boarding the area where I'm tiling (on both walls the bath/shower is against). Thing is, the good plaster which I'm leaving on the walls is an inch thick - hence the dot n dab so the boards meet the good plaster flush.

Many thanks
James

So...
I boarded all the walls today (pretty much every single bit of render collapsed so had to board every wall).

The brick was so uneven I tried my best to get the boards even (CTD only had 1200mm boards in so had to jigsaw a few together) but on some of the joints there is a couple mm difference, and where the boards meet the good render there are lips and dips.

What’s the best thing to do to even everything out? I’ve had to feather one wall with adhesive as there was a massive dip between boards.

Thanks in advance!

If you’re meeting boards against render on the same wall then there is your issue. It might’ve been better to spend extra time and hack off every last piece of render and board the lot. All you can do is use Adhesive to flatten things up really.

When doing the prep with tiling it’s important to spend the time prepping everything perfectly because even small things that aren’t quite right can become quite large compromises once you reach the tiling stage.

If you haven’t already then get yourself a featherdge or two. Level things off nicely. I’m sure it’ll be fine. All the best

Yeah I’ve got a feather edge. I’ll spend today sorting it all out. Cheers Walugi

...with a vertical and horizontal line?
Horizontal datum to mark the heights of all obstructions to see where I want to start tiling (vertically). I put my level on the wall and it looks ok, I think I’ve just messed up my my brick formation but will double check tomorrow.. either way I can’t do mymuch about it now other than learn from the experience 😱

Yeah too late now, need to make more use of your laser, if you'd have seen the wall was falling back could have taken ten mill off the bottom rows and finished at a full tile at the ceiling...not being condescending at all, just use the tools to there full potential 😉

Mate not taken badly at all, thanks for the tip. I’ll be using the laser a lot more now believe me 😀

Mate, I used your tip on the internal corner of the bath and it worked a treat 🙂 thanks so much!!!

It’s not too bad.. to be honest it’s like trying to polish a turd in this bathroom! It’s not a perfect job mate, but it’s my first.
I’ve made a schoolboy error of starting with a full tile in the corner though 😕 idiot!!!! Won’t make that mistake again!
Thing is though the wall is a bit pissed so as it goes up from the bath I’m now having to cut in 10mm slithers of tile 😡

My own bathroom? No. Why do you ask?

I ask because I think it’s morally unacceptable to charge for work that you clearly have no experience in doing!
