Newly tiled hallway but gaps all around the edges

too much time on the site is what it is guys, mountain out of mole hill situation... who cares your gonna do what ya gonna do anyway just put your opinion and that's all that needs to be done no point in all this jibba jabba! admin can you change me name back to mr T PLEASE 😉

Every internal corner is a movement joint whether you like it or not, or class it as one or not. It's because of that fact, that we have to cleverly tile it so the tiles don't pop off or cause issues elsewhere. Using Silicon OVER the joint (not in it) so that more problems don't arise from water ingress etc.

well that's it isn't it dan... it only ''really'' matters in wet areas at the end of the day a bit of cracked grout against a bluddy skirting board isn't going to bring the world to an end but to the o.p if it is missing grout and Silicon you need to call the tiler back and not be on your knees trying to Silicon and leave a horrible mess lol

but if you do decide to do it get an old cup with water and dip ya finger in each time you strike it or you will feel like flubber lmao

Ash imo that is completely the wrong attitude.
Care to do the job right, care to meet a standard, care to leave something functional, fit for purpose, asthetically pleasing, and with a good longevity.
We all should care.
Geoff - no pun intended in your last post? Crack on! 😉

ali im not saying that is what I would do, im just talking about this site man everything gets dragged out and arguments are constant... all of my pride goes into my work and I don't walk away from a job until all internals have been siliconed lol.... just a bit tired of poppin on and all I see is arguments sort of drags the site down a little don't ya think mate?

To be honest, I'm not even arguing, just trying to get my point across!?! I'm not getting personal, or taking it personally.. I know what we are supposed to do, and the reason for it, but I've seen no evidence in the real world to back up the BS line!?!

Jesus don't use ya finger to wipe Silicon ....... All that bacteria in ya spit makes it go all black and horrid.

That, next to the kitchen plinth thread is one of my fave threads,I love the internet !

something else about plinths you can attatch some sort of plastic clipping that runs against the tiles (no idea what its called) but it will always ensure a clean removal when ever it is needed 😉 and yes I am sure you all know what I mean just thought I would ad some info to the thread lol

yeh I really should learn how to use one of these tools stef I will soon got a bathroom floor to quote for next weekend may pick one up to try when I Silicon the ''skirting'' lol

The secret Ash is to just put a bit too much into the joint then spray it down with a diluted mix of fairy liquid & then come up or down the join with the Silicon tool & put excess onto a paper towel or wonder wipe.
With a bit of practice you will be surprised how good a finish you can achieve.

. As soon as I read that I thought to myself,
"I've never had a complaint"

As bad as my comment the other night,
"The last time I tried that on the laptop I got a virus"

I agree spray bottle, a little fairy liquid, rubber finishing tool (fugi?) or well practiced finger.

My wife is always getting at me for pouring out the the last drop of Mr. Muscle or the like, so I can nick the spray bottle.😳

Geoff, how do your pictures show that a Silicon movement joint is essential!?!

My picture shows just how many movement joints there are that require Silicon and any one of these (if it were grouted) would likely crack and could cause major issues such as cracked tiles, bacterial growth in joints etc etc. I'm sure we can all trawl the internet and find photos of examples where installs have failed where there has been no movement joint..

just walk into a showroom, all internals will be cracked unless they have been siliconed.

Obviously you can't just grout an internal corner, it has to be siliconed too, as they always crack. 😉

I also like the fact that the job only ever looks 70% until you do the Silicon... If I had a pound for every time a customer come in and said *what are you gonna do down the corners, then you Silicon and the whole job ties in very nicely. The Silicon is the ultimate finish and it should be on any tilers mind as soon as they start putting tiles on the wall. I usually keep my Silicon joints around 4-5mm, sometimes a bit more around bath or tray, a good consistent joint will raise the standard of your bathroom. Start using Silicon joints lads, move with the times and do it right... He'll we all do things wrong sometimes but if we have the chance to raise the overall standard of tiling across Britain then we should take it!!

It doesn't fail. The grout is there for the colour, the clear Silicon to stop the water. It gives the illusion of being just another grout line, rather than a wider bead of Silicon.

By grouting, you have removed the required room for expansion beans
