Ihave a disabled friend who was having his bathroom modified to make life a little more bearable, anyway the tiling was done this week and i went in for a nosey. The tiler using 450x300 ceramic tiles left a cut at the bottom (obviously down to his marking out)then started from here tiling around the room FIRST course complete he then did the next and so on.Question i have is this, does anyone else use this method or is the guy from another planet/Your thoughts please girls and boys. Brian.

I have heard of this method, though I am way to early into my career to have tried this. Suppose it ensures that your grout lines match up all the way around. Think maybe I would do the first course at datum level then go around wall by wall. interesting to see what others think.

It is wise to put your first two courses on around the room so as to make sure each wall will meet.. as tiles do tend to vary in size and if you tile one full wall and then move to next then there is a chance your joints could run out....i take each wall up two to three rows at a time so if any adjustment is needed on each course then they will line up.....dave....

Thing is Dave they didnt line up at one corner,so thats why i was wondering why he did this,

What i used to do is use a no batten method where you set out as normal and instead of putting a batten at the hight where the first row would lie, you mark your tile line half way up the wall and put a level line accross it, use a very strong adhesive (super grip) and put a few courses along that line accross the wall and then tile down to the floor cutting the last raked cut in at the floor. Move to the next wall and set out the width then come off the hight of the other tiles and repeat all the way round making sure your tile hights match. Once all 4 walls are done half way up, finish the top half. Be carefull of what adhesive you use for this method, Palace Super Grip would be my choice for ceramics

I'd have stuck a datum line around the room to work out where the tiles will all fit and then you can start on any wall in a decent bottom right corner (as I'm right handed and trowel right to left).... and stick the bottom cuts in when I steal the batten for another wall. Although using a decent grab adhesive would be the same for me just with no batten, i'd still use a datum to setout and then mark the tile row and column ends next to the cuts if that makes sense so you know where all the tiles sit before starting to fix any.
