Should I Be Useing Hardiebacker?

Guys n gals

Have been asked to tile a 1st floor room with 900x150 porcelain wood effect tiles.
The sub floor is new floor boards as it is part of an extension which seem very solid with no noticeable deflection.
I am intending on laying 6mm Hardiebacker boards prior to tiling. Is this the recommended process and do these need to go down on a bed of flexi adhesive?

Thanks in advance

Hey @Lakey,
I've changed the thread title so that your question is more relevant.
It was a little confusing.

Using Hardie will suit your purpose just fine.
And using a flexible adhesive for both the Hardie and tiles would be the right way to go imo.

@3_fall is there a specific tile levelling brand/system you would recommend.
Don't think they would be applicable to the tiles described above but keen to give them ago on some larger format porcelains.

Well they work very well on planks I think,
But u need to check them for bowing.
It may well state on the packaging what break of bond they recommend for their tile, a lot do now, with planks.
Personally I prefer Rubi, but most others prefer Raimondi.

I use the lash levelling system - even cheaper and you dont need a special tool ! However I did take a look at the Rubi system and would like to try it eventually, but I will probably wait until I get a nice big job!

Hardie say that only a non flexible adh is required and that is only required where the floorboards require gap filling,so even the adh may not be required in this case if the floorboards are new(and flat)

That's cos ur a tight wad! Hahaha

But how d'u know ur a Raimondi fan if u haven't tried the Rubi? Hehe🙄
Haha did want to give them a go but couldn't find anywhere that did them by the 1000 or 2000. Only found starter sort packs and cost alot. 🙁 maybe was looking are enough.
What you pay for 2000?

@Lakey the screws do the fixing for the hardie board not the adhesive, its just there to fill voids between wood floor and hardie board.

D'u know everyone knows I normally answer chapter and verse!.
So there's me trying to make posts less longwinded and said that there was nothing wrong with his intentions, which there's not!

@JulianSidney, thought that as he intended to use addy then I didn't need to explain about the function of the screws 🙂

@wrighty, I know it recommends non flexible, however, I'll bet on vast majority of us feel that spf is a better way to go, cos it makes sense in our head!
And to be fair, floorboards new or not, how often are they flat enough to not need adhesive! 🙂

This is not me digging at u!
It's me digging at me! Haha

1000&2000? Wow where D'u find them Julian?
All I can find is 100,200&400!

I don't know, that's the point 🙁 if you could I would be more inclined to give them a go. I am not going to pay that sort of money for small quantities 🙂

No problem 3-fall
Just with so many people/companies trying to wangle there way out of it......it often helps to follow ''the letter of the law'' which in Hardie's case will be use their screws, their tape their.............and ''oh you used a flexible adh, sorry no guarantee!

Yeah ur absolutely right mate!
I totally agree with where you're coming from!
So I'll go away with my tail between my legs and apologise!

......but I'll still use flexi and I certainly won't use their screws! They're useless! But then I know it won't fail!

But respect to Wrighty! Honestly! 🙂

Ooow it's the night for apologies! Haha
This is 3rd tonight! Hahaha

Misunderstood u Julian, sorry mate.
Yep seems I missed a word out in your first post, think I got excited about seeing 1000&2000! Haha I wish! 400 at best is about £52, (13p each) that I can find anyway.

That's pricey, the best I've found for the Raimondi ones are just over €0.05 each, 2000 for €105 which I think is about 4p each plus delivery 🙂

Yeah def not cheap mate!
But I don't know about u with the Raimondi but with the Rubi I get so much feedback from the pliers that I can take them to their limit and not snap them.
I'm sure u know what I mean, just the 'feel' thing! Haha

Hi, I've never used the levelling kits but I'm thinking about it as I've got a 1200x1200 porcelain job next week. On the Raimondi and Rubi kits how thick (in mm) are the bottom of the base plates that go under the tiles as I've heard with the lash system you need a lot of adhesive as there clip is shaped like an anchor. Thanks in advance for any replys.

The Raimondi ones are not thin, but I have had no problems with them. If they were any thicker they would be an issue. Without measuring one I would say the base is about 3mm thick.

The Rubi ones will insert under a tile below 2mm
The Rubi ones are soaked for 30mins to 3hrs max which makes them pliable.
If u have a decent trowled bed and back skim your tile, they'll insert with ease!

Also when using these levelling systems can you leave the base clips in the side of the tiles ( say overnight ) then start the next row from the gone off row of tiles.
Or doing a showroom floor with rapid set adhesive, when you do a long bay by the time you get to do the next bay the adhesive would have gone off so could you leave the base clips on the edges.
Thanks.
