Floor and wall prep

Morning guys

Just a few questions if you have time 🙂

Looking to tile the walls and floor of the bathroom in Travertine.

Been reading loads for the past week or so (girl friend thinks im up to something hahaha)

Anyway, i have a sound t & g floor and was wondering could i:
A tile straight onto the floor boards or would i be best overlaying with backerboard first ( if i did the backerboard method i would end up with a fairly high lip going into the bathroom and i dont really fancy that.

Or could i rip the floor boards up and put plywood in its place (20mm).

Next the walls are made of that crappy plaster board that has the corrugated cardboard in the middle.

I was going to take the wall down and rebuild it using 3 x 2 and cladding with backerboard again.

Any suggestions as to what i was going to do?

Is it wrong or right.

If it is possible then ..yes replace floor with 20mm marine ply screwed every 300mm and also if possible put noggins in between joists to strengthen as well usual priming and adhesive etc......Good idea to replace wall with backers as this gives the ability to hang more weight to it....with the travertine...let us know how you get on.......dave..

Afternoon fella's :-(

Any way managed to flood the sodding bathroom hahahaha dislodged the feed to the loo,oppps.

Removed the plaster board skin from the indide of the bathroom leaving the bedroom wall intact (Girlie said she didnt want to see me sat on the loo first thing in the morning) (charming)

Anyway just need to get some 3 x 2 in the morning as im off for a couple of days and need to reinforce the wall now.

A question please .... do i need to plasterboard the wall prior to putting the backerboard on or can i fasten the board straight to the studding.?

Also If i put extra noggins between the joist do i need to dpwn (after removing the floor boards 25mm ply or will i get away with 18mm as i dont really want t step into the bathroom.

Just need to move some pipes and elecy cables before the floor goes down.

You can screw backer boards directly onto timber studs.....and why remove floorboards,just overlay with 6mm backer board....Gaz

You can just screw directly to your floorboards after securing...and the best place for backer board is...well...I will give you 3 guesses lol:wink_smile:

He was removing the floorboards gaz and recovering with ply so as not to increase the floor height.......i would just use 6mm backers if it was me...not alot of height increase really.......Oh! is that a bottle of cider on the cill i see....lol.lol...........dave..

Ok ill whip off the rest of the tiles tomorrow and sort the wall out and the lecy and pipes etc and ill pop back with a a few more pic's.

Evening fella'sSorry for the delay but have been a wee bit busy with a few other jobs awell.

Managed to get the studding up a treat, now have to move some pipes etc and the wiring (just incase anything goes wrong in future.

Having removed the bathroom wall skin means i can put some extra sockets in the bedroom (now she wants the sodding tv mounting onm the bloody wall).

Took some pics of the studding (boring) and after ive sorted the pipes out i can the get on with boarding the floor and make a start on the tiling (I hope).

Any way so far ive strenghtened the wall, moved some mains sockets, changed the rad for a slightly smaller one and mounted a tv.

Well its taken longer than expected as ive had a few rush jobs on (typical)

Gaz i rang on the the shops earlier enquiring over the Backerboard and the guy didnt seem to sure as what i was asking:-( (probably me).

The floor has been screwed down well and the wall studding increased from the last picy, i was wondering if i needed to bond the board down as the floor is pretty flatish but was wondering about bonding it down to get it really flat.

I was going to use a flexible adhesive but was unsure which to use, as he didnt quite know i rang another branch and the guy said he was just with a customer and would ring me back, but he must have forgot too.


Anyway earlier on further up in the thread i was said that i could screw direct to floor, but would feel better sticking it and screwing it, what do you think?.

one quoted me £56.00 for a bag of adhesive? is tthat right.

quick question please..i was looking at the pic of the window wall about 10 posts up (cider on display lol) how would you prepare those walls after the old tiles have been removed. there was old adhesive left on. do you have to reskim the walls with plaster before you start

wet the old ady with a wet sponge or use a wall paper steamer and scrape it off
