Could anyone advise me on tiling onboard a 7million euro yacht.
The spec is there are 15m2 of marble tiles 3-4mm thick already installed. Problem is the chair and table leg keeps going through the tile as the marble is so thin. The original installer siliconed the 4 corners and placed wood crossed under the tiles as there is a 10mm void underneath. As these have moved problems have just begun!
Problem 2: Weight is a very important issue as 15m2 of 4mm tile is approx 400KG
I need to obviously fill this void with something light but strong, also there is an UFH system laying loosely any ideas on the type of glue to use?
Thank you

The installer should have known better than to have voids under marble that thin, Are the tiles grouted

Bal fastflex comes to mind, It will take certain amount of vibration and is lighter than the cementios adhesives

What about the 10mm void I need something light and strong to fill this
Also I am in spain I can get hold of BAL but not much else

would hardi backer/marmot/wedi board do it? would you need a w'proof addy? at 400kg it might turn into a submarine:grin::grin::grin:

The only thing that comes to my mind is some kind of celotex or kingspan.

Alternitively, are you asking in the right forum? Perhaps you should be onto a boat builder's forum.

i can't only worked on 6 and 8 million euro ones!!:boat:

seriously now, it seems a lot of weight per m2 (works out at 26.6666 kg/m2) are you these weights are correct for 4mm tiles?

Check these weights Doug and you are probably right Tiles and Adhesive Weight Per Square Metre - THE TILE SOURCE

Sounds like decorative marble meant for walls only to me. 4mm Marble tiles are not meant for floors I have ground thicker lippage than that:thumbsup:

Hello Scott. You better get in contact with PCI in Spain.
1. The adhesive PCI Nanolight is certified by German Lloyd register Luxembourg as allowed tile adhesive for deck construction on ships. Adhesives allowed for constructions on ships wear a "ship stearing wheel" on the bag.
2. 3-4 mm marble is definetly too thin/too weak as a.m. But, as you mentioned, a thicker marble has influence on the ship weight and therefore influence on the ship´s datas. It needs minimum the allowance of the ship´s owner for a change as he might have to change his ship insurance as the insurance would like to know if the risk has changed.
3. To cover the void ask PCI too for a solution.

As PCI belongs now to BASF, here is the contact in Spain:
BASF Construction Chemicals España, S.A.

Good luck from Germany, Martin

Could you not use an insulation board for the void? I know it's really light, the type for use with undertile heating?
I have tried the nanolight and it is lovely stuff 🙂
Saying that, isn't the new BAL super coverage adhesive (15kg bags) a lightweight type? Perhaps not flexible though.
