Have a small job on tomorrow (3m2 kitchen splashback). Read somewhere in another thread that when doing small splashbacks you needn't wait till the next day to grout, even if your using type 2 adhesive. Can anyone confirm that this is ok to do as if so, it would save me going back on sunday to grout 🙂

Really with tub adhesives, when you grout early, you're stopping the adhesive from drying out well, as tub adhesives are water based and need air to cure.

If you do grout the same day, on a small area, try not to bed out the tiles too much and grout at the very end of the job. Try to leave the last area you tiled and stick your tools on your van and have a brew then finish the last bit.

You'd need to make the customer aware of the fact that they'll need to buff up the grout the next day.

Really though, I think if it says on the tub 24 hours, you're supposed to leave it 24 hours. It doesn't matter if it's a meter or a million meters, the adhesives doesn't dry quicker in smaller areas.

If you can use a cement based adhesive on the job instead, you'll find that grouting that early will have minimal effects on the adhesive.

Thats what i thought and have always done, just wanted to make sure i wasn't wasting a day going back to grout it when it could be done same day.

Cheers m8.

I do it on a regular basis varley and have never had any probs, it also depends on how porous the tile is, i done a shed load for a builder recently where the tile was a four inch, irregular sided item. After about half an hour of fixing they were solid, not cured though. Used to do those kitchens (5m2) worktops, six sockets and an odd shaped cooker hood to cut round, including chrome trim around all edges and window insets, 3 hours to tile, upstairs tile 10m2 bathroom, 5 hours then hour and half to grout the lot.

listen ive same day grouted more times than i can remember with not a single problem as has many other pro tilers!!

yea same day grouting works for me no probs i use string as a spacer so if the tiles are set i cant see the prob🙂

IF WANT FAST TRACK TILING ( same day grouting)
THEN USE A RAPID SETTING POWDER ADHESIVE
TIP IS DONT MIX MORE THAN YOU WILL USE IN HALF HOUR OR SO OR YOU WILL WASTE MORE THAN YOU USE.

Tanks for the reply m8 but i knew about using rapid set, it's just a few people had posted in other threads that it was ok to grout same day using tubbed adhesive, didn't bother in the end, i went back the next day to grout...better safe than sorry eh

The fact is tub ahdesives need the air to get to them to cure. So if it's a sunny day and you've done as little as a splashback and the tiles are 100 x 100's then you're laughing. I'd probably not even travel to the next street to where I live to grout the next day.

But if it's a large area, and/or the tiles are large and/or it's an adhesive that's known for not going off so quickly and/or it's a cold day and even a good adhesive isn't going off too quickly, then it's a wise move to leave it to cure for a bit longer.

get it grouted the same day,i thought you knew what you were doing varley
