Hi All

I was on site today with a tiler who had decided to follow my advice regarding anhydrite screed and used a gypsum based tile adhesive - suitable prep to the screed surface was carried out and an acrylic primer used. I asked him what he thought about the adhesive and whether he felt it was easy to work with or not. His comment was that it was very easy to work with and that he would do so again on this type of screed but said that if he had to criticise (I think he felt he had to give me the bad as well as the good) it was that the adhesive was not a not a rapid set adhesive (not sure what the actual setting time is but I normally say don't walk on it for 24 hours).

Whilst he saw the undoubted benefits of using gypsum on gypsum when I asked hi what benefit using a rpaid set would be to him his only answer was that it was what he alway used and he was simply used to how it worked. He said he normally uses Bal adhesive.

Questions then apart from the obvious it sets quicker - what are the benefits of rapid set to the tiler and what consitutes rapid set in terms of setting time anyway.

Rapid set 1 to 3 hrs , depending upon make...standard set...16 hrs +....

So only useful if you require fast track tiling....BUT..fast set adhesives do have an advantage when tiling to wood etc as the less time moisture is present the better...same with tanking membranes( appplication) for fast track tiling use a fast set.

I use rapid set on small work just speed the job along for grouting, also if there other tradesmen walking about who are liable to walk on the tiles. Setting time can vary but 3 hours can be a standard

:yikes::yikes::yikes:😳

Is the set time based on the pot life or the time it takes to finally set so you can walk on the floor. The adhesive I am talking about has a pot life of 30-40minutes.

always use rapid set on jobs i can finish in a day,don't see any point of wasting a half shift the next day to grout when i can have it done late afternoon:thumbsup:
