you do know that the yellow tape is has a sticky side to it?

you can peel away the top layer to reveal the sticky side so that it helps stick the mat down?

The yellow strips are on the topside of the mesh, and its the white strip beneath it on the underside that needed peeling. But what Thermonet have done now is made the whole underside of the blue mesh self adhesive, which makes me wonder why they need the additional yellow strips now anyway.

I still think that maybe i didn't get all the dust off the floor. did hoover it, but thinking I should have run a damp mop over the marmox it to get the stubborn bits up and then left it to dry before sticking it down. But I have been over it by hand to make sure there are no raised bits of mesh.

Prime the floor before you stick the matt down, Sticks well then. I then use a hot melt gun to glue the loose curls on the ends down so they do not float up.

Wow I'm learning a hard lesson. But I'm absolutely loving it. Even making notes on where I'm going wrong and what I could have done different.

So we left off last time with the issue with the heating. This has been re-channelled to half way between the 2 loose laid wires.

Now for the levelling. Easy for most I'm guessing, but this is a new first for me. never had to level a floor before, even without underfloor heating. Was given a good suggestion of putting some "runners" down the floor, pouring the SLC and running it over with a straight edge. Not got a straight edge...... but did have a nice long straight bit of 2x4 in the shed, so improvised. Next problem, with the UFH found it near impossible to lay any runners.

So I used the 2x4 "free-hand". Took some balancing and a steady hand, but got it close to what I deem as perfect (but then again, I have low standards 🙂). Kinda wish I had a spike roller, but will get one for next time.

Last night, I started tiling. Did all the correct measuring out, loose laid the tiles in each direction to ensure the cuts wouldn't be pap. Know now where all the cuts will fall so nothing left to do now.

Done 3 rows so far. Got me spacers, lip clips, spirit level. Now thinking "should got that spike roller". I see know that the spirit level doesn't tell the whole story. But a bit of adjustment in the bed and all is going well. Will do some more tonight and tomorrow, aiming to finish on Wednesday night.

More pics to follow.

Yes, sorry about that!

from bal level max tech data sheet:

Usage procedure
1. Prime the floor surface if required and allow to dry before
mixing BAL LEVEL MAX. Note: Timber board joints where
gaps between boards are open, use thin heavy duty tape
to bridge joints, care must be taken not to over
everywhere in tape (this will help to minimise the leveller
disappearing beneath the sub-floor).
2. Pour mix over sub-floor and spread to required depth
using a suitable steel finishing trowel or long hand blade.
3. Surface should be sufficiently smooth to receive floor
coverings without further treatment. Note: Do NOT use a
spiked roller; this will pull the fibres to the surface

Not a fan of this slc, used it twice and found it hard going although the finish was good.

paul strange, do not know.
He is a man of the technical data sheet.
if he does not know
black ball for paul 😉

So started tiling the other day but because of work not done any more. Went back to it last night. Spotted some bits i was far from happy with so took a few tiles up to relay them. This is where i'm carrying on from this morning.

Using the tile easy lip clips. But have found that turning them too tight can move the tiles. You may spot one grout joint in the picture that ain't perfect because of it, but its not too far out and won't be spotted when its grouted. I can live with it, but its another "lesson learned" to add to my list.

good adjutant (dog).
evil red briefcase. 😉
nice job paul

I promise, the red case is not mine. Borrowing it from work. However, i'm used to rubi and it hasn't let me down....... yet. Wanna try other cutters before i fork out for one. Just don't know anyone local with a sigma.

As for that dog, he's been a pain. Keeps getting in the way. I shut all the doors to keep him out, and missus thinks its hilarious to keep letting him in.

Nipped out this morning. Got some food in me and cracked on. 2 hours in and only laid 12 tiles (3 metres). But trying to keep accuracy over speed.

And while i'm taking a short break (yep. Still bloody hot in there) wifey has offered to do one of my blue jobs. Gardening.

Looking good Paul, just a little tip mate...always best to finnish a row completely before starting the next, and clear the room of everything that doesn't need to be there..like the big red suitcase 😉

Thank you. Enjoying it, but keep getting interrupted. Would have liked to have got the tiling done tonight. But i've been told i must go to the pub tonight. But i'll behave (maybe), do the last bits in the morning and grout in the afternoon. Like the idea of no pressure when doing your own house, but kinda want it finished now.

I did enjoy it. Bit too much. Being dared to down pints of Hobgoblin. Turned out to be quite........ a heavy beer to be playing games with.

Anyway, loose laying the last couple of full tile and a row of cuts. Got a pipe that i can't take out. Had cut round it. Not done round cuts with an angle grinder. Not bad for a first go but would anyone have done this differently?

is ok paul 😉

put Silicon between iron and tile.
no grouting. iron. with hot and cold moves and risk tile breakage.
good work 😉

Yes! Got all my cuts done. Started laying them.

Also, found out now why they're called levelling clips. Nothing to do with lipping. Instead they show you where you flumped up the self "levelling" compound. Found a hump where i missed a bit of feathering. Higher than snowdon, but not quite as high a Ben Nevis. Hammer, chisel, fixed.

Question. Doing the skirting. Best way to finish it as its the bricks i'm sticking them to aren't flat. They're a bit......... rustic.

Could use trim but it will show every undulation in the wall..

Could use grout to fill in the gap but will show the exposed edge. Will still maybe looker neater thatn trim. Would use Silicon but what colour? The grout i'm using doesn't have a match.

Thoughts? (The one in the picture not yet been stuck)

Thanks for the tips everyone. Got it all grouted yesterday. Managed to do the whole floor in one mix.

Gave it a fine clean and mop up just now and gotta say i'm very happy with it.

Left the skirting for now until i can make the boxing for the ufh but i'll take @antonio's tips on board for lining it all up.

Still have some cleaning of pipe work and the siliconing to do, but thats for another day.

Thanks again for the tips guys its been a great help.

Lessons learnt.

1. Levelling kits don't mean you can overdo the adhesive and get away with it.

2. Work cleaner. Kick plates gonna take some work.

3. When levelling a floor, keep it even. Humps and divets caused by the heated and unheated areas can catch you off guard if you don't fix them first.

4. Plan the layout of ufh mats PROPERLY.

5. Just because you have the theory, doesn't automatically mean you can make an easy job of tiling. But this is a start.

6. Clean tools and buckets after use.

7. Never work in a conseratory on the hottest day of the year so far.

8. Back buttering make one hell of a difference.

9. Test your cutter before use. Being only 2mm out of square can make a HUGE difference. And not in a good way.

10. Ask the wifes permission before using her car washing bucket for grout.

11. So many more to list but i can't type no more 🙂
