advice please fixing large porcelain tiles on wooden floor

Hi everyone , i have got 600 x 600 porcelain tiles to lay on a new t&g chipboard floor. there is some slight movement in the floor but not a great deal. the whole floor is screwed down well.
one tile shop said if there is any movement at all the tiles will break.
has anyone got any experience with this, would the flexi tile adhesive solve this

Hello mate and welcome to the forums. Take out as much of the movement in the floor as possible by putting in more screws, then overlay with either 18mm ply or 10mm backerboard, then commence tiling with flexi adhesives and flexi grout. How big is the floor?

Your tile shop is correct, they will break!

You will need to strengthen the floor and this is usually done by over boarding with 18mm ply screwed to the existing floor and no less than 300mm centres. I personally would use Ardex-flex 7001 for your adhesive. If you use this you will need to seal the backs and sides of the plywood overly with polyurethane varnish prior to laying and then Prime the tiling face with Ardex P51 primer.

For those size tiles you may find that they are not flat, the may be convex in one or both directions. It is imperative that you achieve a solid bed fixing, ie a complete coverage of adhesive between the tile and the floor. The ardex adhesive helps achieve this by being quite a thin mix, you will need to use at least an 8mm notch trowel or preferably a "solid bed" trowel with 10mm half round notches at 20mm centres. Finish of with a flexible grout, Ardex do their FL and FS ranges amonst others but my current favourite is Mapei Ultracolor Plus.

As long as the movement in the floor is not structural (bad joists etc) Follow this good advice and you will be fine.

thanks everyone and hello again,
unfortunetaly 18mm ply is not an option, max i could add to floor is 6mm ply.
would the seperating membrain take up the slight movement or is it only for lateral movement, the floor is 20m2.
only hoping not to have to take floor up to strengthen as it is chip t&g glued

Hi pepper 007, and welcome, 6mm ply will be not be good enough and will be a waste of time. Some of these guys above have been professionally laying floors for years, so you really need to take their advice or prepare to fail. Good luck
