1 metre tiles

hi all,,my latest lovely job is putting up 1 metre ceramic tiles,,300 mm width and 12 mm thick tiles,,im using rapid set flexi adhesive(bagged) and wondered would i be better with a thicker grout line than 4mm to look good with these tiles or is 4mm suffficeint,,going on a wall by the way.thanks

id have stuck with 2mm...are you sure they are ceramic kilty, not porcelain..

So they're 1000mm x 300mm? Check how well they're caliberated, and go from there. If they're very even in size, and square enough, you can go a little bit thinner, say 2-3mm. From a technical standpoint, other than compensating for tile and substrate uneveness, more than 2-5mm isn't normally required. It's more a question of taste.

I'd generally say thin joints look better than wide joints, but it depends on the style of the tile and the rest of the furnishings. From a purely aesthetic perspective, large tiles tend to benefit from fairly thin joints, IF they're evenly sized and shaped. Rustic style tiles tend to benefit from wider joints, but they also tend to be smaller.

If its the Porcelonsa ones, the calibration should be ok, used them a while back and they were ok.

2mm joints would be fine
just be carefull when you push the suckers into the adhesive they tend to bend a touch and can spring back before the adhesive sets leaveing lips and hollows

thanks all for the advice ill need it with this one haha,,walls are not too bad i did advise the customer to get a plasterer in to make them perfect but its that old nutshell again,,they dont want the expense so ill make the best of what i can do myself,,ill post pics of the job once completed.

You might want to check the weight of the tiles if the walls are skimmed they may be to heavy

the walls are original lath n plaster,in decent nick apart from 2 bubbled bits which have movement behind the double shower tray this being due to no tanking! so im going to cut them out and dot and dab plasterboard onto them finishing with a skim on the 2 peices only,,also 2 packed out peices of wall to fit shower tray which im putting hardi backeronto as these are made of cheap chipboard do you guys think this sounds sufficient to hold the weight,,i personally thought it would be fine?

gypsum plaster. the weightof the tile should not exceed 20kg/m2

do not skim the plaster bord just fix the tiles to the bord.

The trouble with lath and plaster it can break away at any time especially with the weight of the tiles your proposing to put up, I would'nt IMO

hi whitebeam,,okay heres my situation,,im pretty new to tiling,,only done 6 jobs so far,,iv priced a job for a 17 sq metre bathroom refit walls only and ceramic tiles i was told,,customer turned up today with 1000mm by 300mm 12 mm thick tiles..lath n plaster walls in decent nick but not dead straight as requested,,i was going to spend 2moro prepping my walls and makin good all i could before starting,,i do have concerns about the weight of these tiles but thought it would be okay,if lath n plaster is not suitable what other measures could i advise the customer?cheers

Did a job using similar tiles end of last year 260m2 in total 5 ensuites massive house LOL They were ceramic and I used 3mm spacers tiles were not 100% but the 3mm looked good. Think the tiles were spanish as we had to wait three weeks for extra tiles to come in the contractor had cocked up on his measurments. Used SPF and my the lord did they stick to the wall the sparkys messed up a socket and we had to take one down oh what a nightmare then plumbers had measured outlet pipes for radiators in wrong place :mad2: so best of luck mate and hopefully you will not have to take any off.

We went up three to four rows and then moved onto next wall just due to weight issuse and let the adhesive go off before we went higher. We were going up 3.5 meters high so wanted to make sure we were not going to high to quick.

was gonna do the same section it so not too much on at once..im a bit unconfident about the weight now though as some are advising me lath n plaster may not be a good base to put these tiles onto?? any veiws peeps?

With that size tile the best thing to do is remove lath and plaster and board with plasterboard. Fix the tiles directly to the board DO NOT SKIM fix the board with screws not nails. gypsum plasterboard can take 32kg/m2.

The customer admittedly dos'nt want that mess of lath and plaster being ripped off and I have over boarded with 12.5mm plasterboard onto and fixed to the studwork. Again the customer was wrong and should have asked your advise before buying, But they don't:huh2:

i am currrntly doing 600mm x 300mm and these are 10mm thick i am using an 2mm space depending on the effect off the tile really i would say i.e if marble use like virtually no space
