Hi Guys

I want to lay 60by30 porcelin floor tiles in the bathroom. The floor is plywood 18mm well screwed down to the sub floor.Very solid, no movement.I have some BAL rapid flexi adhesive but was wondering if there is an additive to use to give a good bond to the ply.Or would I be better using a different type of adhesive all together

Cheers
John

That adhesive will be fine....no need to prime the face of the ply when tiling with bal cement adhesives......

Just adhesive?...So the back face of the ply doesnt need treated?...I cant just apply the addy and get the job done.....brilliant......thanks guys

The back of the ply should be sealed in some way normally, bal recommend BAL Bond SBR for the back and sides.

That would mean having to lift the ply,and everything is on top of it......bulkhead, bath, etc......nightmare........any ideas?

mmmmmmmmm! Should really have been sealed as said before. You may get away with it but BAL wouldn't stump up for any warranty issues if you have not done that bit!

Drop Gaztech a PM and clarify with him what the warranty issue would be but i have checked my bal literature just this evening for an overboarded kitchen and that is what their Fixers guide says.

Thanks for that Grumpy.
Will the tiles lift if the back face aint treated. What alternatives do I have?

To be honest, you will almost certainly be ok. The sealing is to prevent moisture ingress and hence movement. If it was me, I would just carry on and hope for the best. Unless you have a problem in the house with damp or you have kids that make the floor a paddling pool, I am sure it will be fine!

the tiles might not lift but best practice is to seal the back of the ply wood if you dont wont to do this throw some backer borad on top of it or some ditra matting

Does anyone really treat the back of ply :whatchutalkingabout

BS and all that...........but who really does it. Come on, be honest

i dont guarantee anything on ply wood and put that on my quotes there are so many good alternatives these days .years ago i used to staple wire mesh to the ply wood and then it was ardex x7 with ardion 90 in it ,didnt ever get any failures like that but have had probs with single part flexi a couple of times and 2 part also some people love ply wood just a case of once bitten twice shy for me

I think I will go for it.....thank you Grumpy
