That’s how I was taught to lay Marley tiles, but obviously no grout joint, so you sit tile you’re marking directly on top.
He sounds more like a Chicago gangster than tiler

But he's leaving no gap at the skirting.

I just turn the tile upside down and mark it against the next tile using a spacer then take off the amount (10-15mm) for the movement joint under the skirting.
