advice for setting out?

Hi I am new to tiling. I would like to get some guidance for setting out . My first project is a a single wall in a cloakroom with a central window. I will need to tile around sink waste and soil pipe. Any good videos for setting out and dealing with out of true wall and window reveals?

Hi and welcome. As far as setting out is concerned id centre the window both horizontal and vertically. If the window is centre of the wall your intending to tile then that's perfect.
The basin waste and soil waste is secondary considerations in my opinion. They will both be partly concealed by the pottery. The window will be first year "feature" point by the sounds of it.
What are the walks condition and construction? Wit tiles are you planning on fixing?

Hi thanks for getting back, the wall is painted plasterboard. cloakroom project 17th march.jpg Here is a photo of the wall I want to tile half way up the window and keep window sill. what considerations do I need to make and where do I want finish tile level in relation to winow base?

I can't view the picture mate because Im on my mobile.
But ill try to answer on what you've written.
A good thing for you to do is to make up a layout stick. Use a bit of 2x1 place a tile on the end and mark where it finishes. Add a spacer and place another tile and mark where it falls. Continue so you have a around 4' of tiling marked out. You can then use this and a level to see where your tiling will come to when placed against the wall. Take a bit of time to see where the cuts would fall for the best layout. You can use the reverse face to do your width layout if your tiles differ in orientation. Perhaps pick where you want you tiles to finish and work down, marking the wall to see where your bottom cuts would fall if need be.
Can't really advise on the seal without seeing the picture. But you have a few options. If its prominent from the wall you could remove, tile and replace after. Could but it back flush, tile and over board with uPVC. Or the less favored option is but your tiles around it.

Hope this helps. When im home later ill have a look at your picture.

Horizontally you don't want a small cut at ceiling or top/bottom of window and full tile down sides of window looks good if your lucky!
Painted plasterboard needs to be scratched and acrylic primed before you start.

Don't use a stanley knife to scratch the plasterboard otherwise you could weaken it.....

Have we had any quotes from any local Tilers??
From the picture, it should probably be a one day job, and if the quote is acceptable to you, you can expect a good/perfect finish - and without the hassle of doing it yourself and getting all the tools/materials....

This is more about learning to tile than save money. It's the first and smallest of three jobs on this house and i have more in the pipeline so I'm asking advice on how to approach the job and what I need to be aware of. It seems from the outset that planning and prep is a good 60 % of the job.

yes it is it needs to be removed and isolated. This will be done along with the fan that needs to be installed. what would you recommend to cover back box?

Are you getting a Sparks in to do the electrical works ? If so he will probably put a junction box under the floorboards so you can then fill the hole, and tile over it, what size and type of tile are you fixing ?

The socket won't be needed so it will be terminated correctly under the floor and a piece of plaster board put in to cover socket and gap at bottom of wall, this way I will have a sound surface to tile to. I intend to tile upto half way up the window how difficault are mitre cuts to do for a couple of rows of tiles? tiles will be around 300mm ceramic not decided yet.

cheers F

The mitre's are easy enough to do, depending on tools / skills available, the only downside to mitring ceramics is the amount of biscuit showing and the edge of the tiles shape.

hi , the socket is an end spur, I have a couple of mates who are qualified to tell me the correct procedure. that's the least of my concerns. I just want to get the window spot on. I will choose the tiles shortly and then see what the best options are for neatest finish. do I use a mitre cut or select a trim ? Thanks for asking any how.

Let us know when you've selected a tile (post a picture or a link) and we'll be able to advise what will look best around the window reveal.

Cool. Just took it from your posts you were doing it all yourself. Like i pay Im not a sparks.

As bri said. Pick your tiles out and we can suggest appropriate finishing touches, trim etc

I would like a little advise on setting out and squaring the window. From the photo you can see the waste pipes for wc and sink are centered around the window, ( ignore socket it has been safely removed ) which will take presidence when setting out . I will be using 400x250 ceramic tiles and a 3tile travatine mosaic as a border to finish half way up the window. I want to keep the window sill. I will be using a piece of plastic trim between sill and mosaics and but jointing the mosiacs at the top . My questions are do I cut sill to accomodate tile or cut tile to accomodate sill ? and in which order do I tile ? Do i tile from first full tile at bottom to level on sill, then square window , tile up sides of window . or tack up trim to squared measurement of window and then tile to this , followed by tiles in reveal?

any advise appreciated.

1st job progress

Hi Guys, I wanted to say I have respect for tilers out there, having just come back from my first project tiling weekend. I had to work around, out of square window reveals bowed walls and waste pipes " all in a days work I hear you say " . If I hadn't used the forum and done my homework I would have definitely have come
un-stuck. Here are a couple of shots of the job so far. P1030231.jpgP1030245.jpgP1030270.jpgP1030271.jpg
