600x600 porcelain quote

Hello all

I need a bit of advice on quoting for a floor where the customer will only settle for perfection!

45m2 Floor which covers the hall, utility room, kitchen, and dining room
in 600X600 white glossy porcelain.

Substrate is old terazzo tiles and slc and is nice and level.

All materials will be bought by the customer so only need a price for labour.

The builder has said to quote the job a bit higher than normal and to be prepared for the customer to be watching and critising the slightest defect.

So what how would you folks price this?

I really appreciate any help with this.

go in between £30-£35 sqm. normally charge £30 so just add a bit on as it may take longer if customer keeps interfering

tiles will probably need sealed,i smell trouble so you are under pressure from the start,do you really want to work under the strain?If so then charge accordingly,same as above.

I've just estimated a 800 x 800 porcelain job up (75 m2) at £35 m2 and was told today that I'm way out and almost double the price of the other 2 tilers that quoted.. So what do i know..:mad2:

I'd go in at £30 m2, gag her up and lock her in the cupboard until you have done the job..

I think I'm going to go in at £40 m2 and just take my time. if they agree I'll spend a day or so going through layout, spacing and the such with them and get them to sign a contract of some kind. I don't mind a bit of hassle for £1800!!

I'd be £20 quid a m2, but id probably loose it at that price over here in Norn Iron. Bri, If its decent porcelain should it need sealed, i havnt sealed any porcelain tiles yet!:stupid:

Allways seal polished porc Davy, the polishing procss can open tiny pores in the manufacturing process. I hear of guys testing the tiles for staining but peronally i wouldnt take the chance of not sealing

I had this the other week . I went and quoted for a job and the customer thanked me for my quote but had decided to use another tiler . Then 3 weeks later got a call from said customer who said that the tiler he had was taking forever and had told him that he didn't want him to come back, and would I take the job over . So I went to have a look at what the other tiler had done . WELL when I turned up he had his nieghbour there as support . looked at what the other tiler had done and it was all fine then I realised that it probably wasn't the tiler , more likely the customer and his nosey nieghbour . Well he as good as gave me the job there and then I had already slightly overpriced anyway . When I went to bed that night I could not get to sleep just could not get out of my head that every second the nosey nieghbour would be popping in to give his opinion and causing me greaf . So I called the customer up and apologuised and said that regular customer of mine had dropped a load of work on me and I would not be able to help for a few months . so he said thanks for trying and called someone els and I got a good night sleep !!! weigh up the hasle versus money = mc2 = good night sleep. greaf for some other poor bugger !!!:hurray:

When you are in tiling someones room/floor the area belongs to you. I would not tollerrate this kind of behavour from a customer never mind there niebour. If a customer is bugging me on a job they better have good reason as I am at my work. It may be there home but it is your work. This same rule also applies to other tradesmen. I will acocmadete where i can though, If I can easily work around other people I am more than happy to accomadate but certainly not in the first day when you are setting out and getting a feel for the room.

As for the customer, you have to take on board any concernes they might have with the job but you must not allow them to cross the mark, i.e changing there minds half way through the job, or just generaly being a pest. You get more respect from them bieleve me.

Recently I have to re-clarify terms and conditions with one my fav customers who feels the need to call me on the job.

As for the niebour I would have very little or no tollerance to there interfearance, I would quite simply and politely ask them to leave my area as i do not have time for them. IF THEY CROSSED THE MARK..

You need to be fussy in yourself to lay 600x600 polished porcelain anything less and the error will stand out like dog balls. As a tiler you are a finishing trade and you will always encounter fussy clients (Goes with the job) perfection is paramount not only for your client but for your reputation. If you are worried about the client then always price high, but don't beat yourself up if you don't win the job. Perfection always comes at a cost, and the cost is to the client not to your reputataion should the job turn out to be less than perfect. If you win the job at a high quote you can take your time get it right concentrate on your fixing technique. But most importantly forget about the money whilst your fixing. Do the best job possible. And work will find you.

Every job you do your reputation is at stake your only ever as good as your last job fussy client or not you should have faith in yourself to do the best job you can do, polished porc will need sealing and if you can get £40 m2 good luck to you imo £18 - £22 m2 is about right and fair if your geared up correctly its just another tile

£18-£20 M2 for polished porcelain????
I get £20 M2 for ceramics mate,would`nt even contemplate any natural stone for that price
If that was me quoting it would be £35-£40

For labour only I would be tempted to go at about £27-£30 per sq m. You have to judge each job on its merits, I did a 40 sqm 600 x 600 porcaline floor a couple of weeks back, the customer was great. He knew what he was talking about and expecting but respected me as a professional, leaving me to get on with the job.

If you think its going to be hassle I would add a couple of days, end up going in at about £1400. I lost out on a job (30sq m kitchen) the other week at £1200 including materials, the customer said he had someone quote £670.:mad2: It seems like some pricing is all over the place.
