Anyone can tile – can’t they?
Myself & my Wife joined a gym last December on the promise that an upgrade of facilities would be taking place early in the new year. The other day I saw a workman in the disabled toilet. I took interest because he had with him 2 boxes of tiles. His whole demeanour did not fill me with any confidence at all.
A few days later I checked the disabled toilet to find out the quality of this chaps workmanship. The enclosed pictures need to words to describe what a total mess he made of the job. I have taken a personal interest in this situation because I am a tiler, and I have a disabled Daughter.
I asked to see the Manager of the club, but surprise surprise when the receptionist checked his whereabouts he was in a meeting. He promised to call me, but that was last Thursday and I have not had a call.
I also enclose a picture of the men’s shower area which has had a few tiles replaced. The grouting looks like it was put on with a trowel and left for a few days to harden. It really is no joke what these builders have done.
If I was allowed to I would name and shame the gym, but for legal reasons I had best keep their name quiet.
Cheers Sean

Compared to some of the gyms i have been in ,thats pretty good, but what do you expect when builders pay labourers to throw(literally) the tiles up.

It really has nothing to do with the manager of the gym ,at the end of the day all he can do is pass on that someone has complained about the standard of tiling,to be honest not something they are gonna care about, while they are getting the revenue off all the people who are'nt tilers,if 1 in 100 hundred complain they laughing all the way to the bank.

The managers of most gyms that I do work for would not stand for that abortion of a job. They have the say so of what work is carried out and believe me they want top notch results.

Thats fair enough diamond, but at the end of the day they are only managers who answer to the owners, who pay the builders, who have the final say on what they deem exceptable obviously the owner of said club has let it go.

Am not defending the work in any way shape or form(its ****)but its been passed by the owner, and unless every member is a tiler and complains nothing will be done.

They (management ) should care about it isnt it supposed to be a gym you dont pay through the nose to look at crap once youve finished your sweaty work out . It should be a pleasurable experience from start to finish .(gym surroundings i mean)
Brinkley, my Wife will not use the shower or the Ladies changing room because they are in a worse state of repair than the male changing rooms! We were told (verbally!) that all areas of the gym/changing rooms and pool would be upgraded. You are right, the experience should be a pleasurable one, but it's not.
However, I got a general broadcast email from the gym today stating that there will be disruption during the referb, and that members could use any other gym in the chain. More importantly, it stated that if any member wants to advertise their business or give discounts to other gym members then to contact the Manager.
I now need to get on the good side of the Manager, as I want to get my card on their notice board. This was an idea I tried to get the previous Manager to buy into, but he was not interested. Saying that, I will still bring to his attention the bad workmanship in the disabled area.

Cheers

So who is the firm?

Within La Fitness the manager is usually brought in because of his/hers marketing skills, they know how to run a club, they probably have little understanding of fitness, this is left to the fitness managers. They have a duty to keep their club up to the highest standards and in turn they attract new members. If you look at the figures of a typical club, they will have upwards of 1500 members and each will pay about £30 per month, thats £45,000 minimum going through their books which equates to over half a million in cash terms, if you think their standards fall below par then complain loudly, they are a plc and they want to keep their share of the market.
Their marketing director is Dave Wickers, I have his mobile number but obviously I cant put it here, I will pass your comments on to him when I next speak with him as I think you have a justified case.
