This is a close up picture I have just taken. Sealed with langlows patina with 1 coat of Osma Wax. last cleaned 6 years ago. 2018-01-09 10.33.13.jpg

What difference does it make ?
Also, John, the white spirit, is that to help the oil thin down and soak in further faster ?

The difference in the clay between terracottas ie Mexican, Spanish, French etc give different colours, different surfaces, but mostly different densities.
Yes the white spirit just thins the oil down for the first coat. As the terracotta is very dry ( like blotting paper) it soaks the sealer up fast. If it’s used neat it soaks in patchy and overlapping causes staining. You should really put plenty on until it accepts no more but this can sometimes cause the oil to dry on the surface and it has to be removed.
A point to note : never clean the tile surface with water or get wet and then seal with the oil. This will cause the oil to dry patchy as it dries unevenly.

Thanks John. They were incredibly light and chalky, I forgot just how porous they were. Can you apply the oil on the same day as fixing with rapid set providing the surface isn’t wet? I think last time i fixed them i wet the backs with sponge before fitting each one.

Yes - we would set up a long table so you could 1st coat 12 + tiles at a time.
By the time no. 12 you can go back to no.1 and 2nd coat it. Always hold the edges of the tiles, not the surface as it will stain off your thumbs/fingers. Stack them on their sides back to back face to face and if still drying put a spacer peg between them to allow the air to circulate. You can fix them straight away when dry keeping the surface clean as you work, but a damp sponge will take any addy marks off as you go. You can use a damp sponge on the backs to get any dust off.

Yes I have Seen tilers coat partley pre sealed tiles with oil. Then to have them dug up and start again. Or Corilo using gallons of oil and still being pourous.

It’s appreciated John, don’t worry I’m not moonlighting in The toon on the weekends

That’s why we are here!
I’ve been out to report on too many disasters with terracotta and it’s the main reason why as a floor covering product it died a death.
It’s a quality product that should get better with age but of course only if it’s installed correctly.

I agree with getting better with age but I have only seen old floors I have done with oil and wax I'm not so sure it would be the same with acrylic sealers.

No I agree.
It’s the patina build up of the wax that makes this such a unique floor covering.
However customers are all for ease of maintenance and the alternative sealers provide some protection without adding to the aesthetics of the product.

Another big thing was with terracotta. Especially machine made terracotta with oil marks when people had used sponges, brushes, rags, ect, to oil them. As all companies who sold them recommended.

Although only 4.5m it’s very very uneven with it being an old cottage, so needs some levelling, and with the time spent sealing and return trips , it’s expensive for a small area. I suspect he hasn’t been able to find some who is interested in it or who knows about the linseed oil etc. I told him on the quote that I know the number 2 Tiler in the U.K. timeless John so that might have drawn him in.
