New Diyer

Hi,

DIYer for many years, about to embark on my 3rd big tiling project bathroom, floor with UFH, shower cubicle with flush tray, and all round bath.

Lurked for a while, registered to see what else I might be able to learn 🙂

Welcome aboard that sounds like a fair mission! Pics before and after win prizes. 🙂

Have you considered getting a professional in? They can probably buy all that at trade price and save a fortune, meaning perhaps their labour charges on top beings the total cost to something similar to you buying everything yourself at retail.

You can spend the time then making brews and catching up on your sky+ 🙂

That said, there's no feeling as good as taking a shower in one you've built yourself.

Before...

So that cupboard looked pretty innocent, just whip it out and pop a shower in there... amazing what you find

So the leaking roof needed sorting out first!

Once that was out of the way just a question of moving a few things around. Sink on opposite wall and toilet a foot to the right. Easy enough, apart from the soil stack looked like it might be asbestos, so that took a bit of doing!

Dressed for the part...

And everything (roughly) in place...

Well wouldn't you know it in the last 100 years the house has sunk bit at one end, so the drain off on that shower tray isn't going to be happy. About a 6cm drop over 1.7m!

So the marine play needed packing out, plumbing fits nicely underneath

This is proof it was level when i did it, so in 50 years time when its sank some more I've covered my ***!

So it had rained plenty and the roof repair looked to be holding up, so next job was sort out the ceiling, timber going up ready for boarding...

So with all of the building work out of the way, plastering done. Shower plumbed in tile boards up I've finally been able to get around to something vaguely tiling related... tanking!

The corner is (of course) not square, hence the recessed area!

So thats the state of play, its taken few months to get here but you can probably see why!

Yeah, definitely as @antonio says, pack out the bottom of your niche with a bit of hardie to something, then you can use non-cut tiles at the bottom of the niche.....
Great work so far - lovely building stuff and everything, the thing that dreams are made of!

Thanks for the encouragement! After 20 years of DIY I feel like I'm finally getting (almost) semi-competent!

I'm interested to know why you guys would pack out the recess? Everything I read said cut edges everywhere and never butt up tiles, is this the one exception that proves the rule? was gonna do the recess in metro too but I'm starting to think mosaics (I know how predictable!) might look ok...

Floor primed ready for UFH..

Tile's gone down under furniture just so i can get it plumbed back in before the wife and kids get back!

Heres a silly question. Do I great first then silicon the corners, or the other way round. Or doesn't it make much difference?
