Wetroom tray envelope cut setting out challenge

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Guys. I've cut the tiles and laid them out today (@3_fall you'll be interested to know that I followed your advice and went for the overhang on the surrounding tiles).

However, I've encountered a problem. I completely failed to take into account that I need a grout line between the halves of the diagonally cut tiles!

I've not cemented the tiles down yet, do you think that if I got a tile file I'd be able to shave enough off to get a grout line? Or is there another way you can suggest, that hopefully won't involve getting a table saw and cutting new tiles.

Steve

In short, no. You will need a wet saw or a good blade and steady hand using an angle grinder. How were you proposing on cutting out for the drain?

Thanks @Plan Tec Tiling I'm so disappointed. I don't know why I didn't think about the grout line. What a fool. Oh well, I suppose I'd better buy a wet saw.

I was simply going to cut the corners off the half tiles for the drain using my manual cutter. I'd only laid the drain on the top for the photo.

Steve,
Geoff ^^^^^is absolutely right that is the best way forward.
U could hire a wet cutter, maybe for even half a day, rather than the expense of buying one.
Depending on how hard the tile is u could also scribe your cut line with a mechanical cutter then using a pair of tile nippers remove the offcut.
Then tidy up the edge with a carbarundum stone.
It's fiddly work, but it can be done, depends how confident you are.

You managed the transition between the floor and tray then without too much bother?
Are u pleased with the result?

I looked at hiring one but it seemed pretty expensive. Plus I would need to hire a transformer too. Might be just as well to buy one and sell it on ebay afterwards. Although all the ones in Screwfix etc look pretty rubbish really.

Tile isn't very hard but I did try scribing a line and nibbling it last night but the result looked pretty awful. That said, I didn't tidy the edge with a stone.

I think doing the tray as per your suggestion was definitely the best way of doing it. Obviously I've only laid the tiles in place at the moment but I like the way it looks. Hopefully (when I get the cuts done) I'll be able to get them bedded down evenly.

Do the former with mosaic ,it looks better ,and creates a feature that follows the former ,looks much better

If you've got a local worktop company who does granite or marble, take the tiles in and ask them to cut a couple of millimeters of each tile.should only take them a few minutes and if your nice enough or tell them your planning on getting your kitchen done they may even do it free 🙂

Hire a saw for a hour or take the tiles into topps tiles I think they do a tile cutting service still.

As always, thank you all for your advice and support. I've ended up buying a cheapo wet saw from Wickes and cutting them again. It was actually better than I thought it might be and seems to have done the trick. They're a bit chipped on the edges but I've used a stone on them to get the worst off and I'm satisfied enough with the finish now.

Now to cut out for the drain and cement em in place. Gulp.

Thanks again.
Steve

Nice one @SB4U, that looks excellent, well done for persevering!!! A quick whip of grout over the lot and it'll look amazing!

Many thanks @p4ulo mate. I'm pretty pleased with it. It took a lot of effort but I personally think these type of trays look better than mosaics.

One more question on this though... What should I use to fill between the tiles and and the edge of the drain? Grout or Silicon?

What kind of drain have you got mate??
My Schluter one was set in with adhesive, tiled up to, then grouted in with everything else.
Check your instructions, it should specify.

It came with the @Impey Showers aquadec. It's a stainless steel grate attached to the gully. The picture in the top right seems to show something between the tile and the frame but it doesn't say what it is.

Not sure mate. That's why I'm asking. 🙂
Haha ok it was kinda rhetorical, haha
There has to be some kind of joint between the frame and tile so that there a void to fill. If u butt the tile to the frame, u can't actually seal it.
Otherwise it would fill with water, would it not.

It would.

I was just wondering if it should be grout or Silicon. I'm getting the distinct feeling that you're leaning toward it being Silicon. 🙂

I definitely grouted the schluter one in, as per their instructions, but as it sits over the top of the plastic insert that sits over the top of the kerdi I'm sure in that case it would be fine.
Your system looks different, so it looks like sealant would be best.

1st drawing looks best to me, although how would it work shifting it all half a tile (drain centre of a tile)?
Also,I'd take the bottom 'envelope' cuts to the corners of the former, not at 45° to the drain.

Sorry, managed to skip a page before I posted!
I would Silicon between tiles and drain, just allows for any movement.
