has anyone ever used clout nails for HB250?, hardie recommend either so I've been thinking of using clouts on a job I'm starting on wednesday. Floor is pan flat with zero deflection.

Adhesive and/or screws for me. I wouldn't use clouts for anything other than roofing felt. There not ringshanked in any kind of way so can work loose with movements in substrates & coverings. Just my opinion.
What is the substrate Doug?

I'd use an, SBR on the boards, SPF & 4.0 x 25mm Ultra Gold screws. There's too much bounce in clouts. If they made galvy annular ringshanks with a head the size of a clout, that would work but to be safe & for peace of mind, I'd screw it

Really dont like the idea of nailing, knowing my luck the banging would crack the plaster on the ceiling below.

definitely screws on floors for me, much more secure than clout nails.
but on a zero deflection floor with addy, weight of boards, more addy and then tiles do you think there would be any movement here Ed. Just playing Devils Advocate here.

there's always movement in a building through out the course of a year doug but its your job so its your call ;0)

it probably is to big a floor to experiment on tbh, about 40m2 opus limestone, but I did wonder why Hardie would say galv clouts would be fine. I'll stick to screws:smilewinkgrin:

If you do use clout nails Doug , they have to be roofing clouts and not plaster board clouts.. the roofing clouts are barbed..

When i first used hardi , i used roofing clouts as advised by the rep.. floor is still solid but i now use screws.. peace of mind.

I did forget once to screw the hardie to the floor after fixing with spf, that was a number of years ago and it stayed there....

I prefer a screw to a bang any day :vanish: I generally use Keraquick + 3.9 x 25 MDF Tite screws from Screwfix.

I got the notion of clouts after talking to customer, (actually my wife's cousin) but anyway the general gist was that his dad (god bless him lol) had said that 6mm ply would be better:lol::lol:, so I showed the customer what hb 250 was on hardies website. Whilst I was showing him the pdf I noticed that hardies also mentioned using non-flexible addy for bedding to substrate, that immediately set off alarm bells as I always use spf to bed onto, so I rang the tech line and they agreed that spf was correct in conjunction with screws or clouts.

A DIY'er would have just gone with the specs off the website and probably end up with a failure and wonder why as they had followed the recommendations.
