I'm tiling a Victorian fireplace in my own home. I started by ripping up the old tiles and using a latex compound to level the floor as well as concrete repair to fill the old cracks and holes.

The fireplace has laminate flooring laid up to it at the moment with beading. I'm laying mosaic tiles with a mosaic border. I need the following advice:

- I've purchased BAL mosaic fix adhesive - What notch size/type trowel is recommended?
- Should I work from the back of the fireplace out to the front or lay the border first?
- There is a height difference from the floor to the beading and laminate - would you recommend further latex levelling to bring this up so the tile is level? Or another solution?

Photos will follow.

Fix some Hardie Tile Backer board to the floor to get your FFL.
Start at the front with your border.
Trowel size depends on mosaic thickness 4-6 mm.
Not sure where the Victorian element comes in and unless tesallated why a mosaic hearth!

Thanks for advice. When we moved in there was no hearth as such. They had tiled it instead using thick floor tiles. It was a bit of a mess to be honest.
Need to add, we will only be using it for an electric fire and is more of a display piece. Interesting you mention a hearth though as never knew or considered this option.
