Hi Guys,

I rescued about 9 pallets of limestone 4 years ago from the skip as a few damaged edges, only 10% so I have a lot of useable ones.

Question is should I seal the back before applying the adhesive.

Ball super cover or Wber rapind white are my favourite choice.

The front has got a few stains from when they were left outside so know I need to clean this before sealing the front.

All tiles are bone dry as stored inside for 4 years.

Just unsure if sealing the back effects tile adhesive.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, don't seal back of the tile. but you need back butter with tile adhesive as you lay them.

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

Thanks Tony, I was also hoping to avoid any bleeding colour from the tile adhesive as made that mistake a while back.

Cheers for quick reply

I do sometimes seal the back of light stone it will do no harm

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

Thanks for the reply DNA, will the sealing of the back of the tile stop any bleeding of white tile adhesive through to the front, especially if the odd dot and dab is required.

Cheers

Hi WB

600 x 400 natural limestone from european heritage 15mm thick, they have a London polution thin coating of black crap on the edges and the odd purple water mark when left outside.

Residue remover has worked on a few test ones.

Cheers

Never dot and dab!

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

Sorry Phil, but a Old victorian property, which i swear at daily, but sometimes needs must.

Just had to rebuild the floor oversite before the expensive raychem ufh does down £2000 bill on materials and hard work, at least the floor is level and doesnt need D and D

I understand and thanks for the heads up.

Missed that one....

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

I know european heritage in fulham , London. Never sealed back of the tile, but well as long as it does not effect on grip with tile adhesive .

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

You shouldn't ever need to dot and dab tile.

If you need to account for an unlevel floor then still spread the adhesive on the floor as normal and apply a few dollops to the back of the tile, but when you press the tile down, it should still be 100% covered.

Dot and dab would suggest you're not getting a solid fix and your tiles are level, but could come away or at least break really easily at some point in the future.

Dot and dab is for plasterboard!

Tony good guess, that is my conundrum does it effect grip and with a bone dry tile any bleed of colour from the adhesive, and missues away and being pregnant I have 1 week to work this out was going to start tiling tiling tonite but thought best ask a question.

Many thanks

Thanks for the advice Dan, was using on the extremities top or side bits.

Lesson learnt.

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

I'd be using a rapid adhesive as well....

I personally wouldn't seal the backs,
Just make sure as stated above, that you "back butter" the tiles, this will at least ensure no "shadowing" if you don't achieve 100% coverage everywhere which is of course what you should be aiming for

Good luck ;-)

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

I would also advice to take sharp edge off of tile, with 129 or 240 sand paper (if it's not done), looks so much better

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

There is anoter test i need to do and put on youtube I have done this for 20 years on light stone that is prone to bleed through. I have never had a problem with adhesion but I only do it because it is the way I was told to do it so I think a test is in order

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

thanks Mattle, good tip thanks Tony

Cheers all

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

Test is allways good , i only work with natural stone for about 10 years. But there is allways something new to learn

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

OMFG,

Just went to lay a few tiles, they are not square got a 3-4mm difference, I use the rubi batten stands with empire blue levels the super expensive ones.

Got my combination square out and yes not square.

I did buy a FLEX tile cutter with fence as thought I might need it, cost me £550 water fed and a great bit of kit.

Question is now how to salvage the tiles as too good to skip, I could go rustic and not care about the tile gaps but thought I would throw the problem out hoping for a wiser solution.

Many thanks again.

CJ

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

chek if they all out of square, or just few. Or even if most are out, you could recut. would not lay them as it is

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

Probably why they were skipped....

Re: Rescued limestone from the skip, advice on whether to seal the bac

I just did some mosiac tiles from fired earth a real headache as no lines ever matched, just checked with pregnant gf with her parents away all ok.
