Just bought a 8x4 sheet of wbp plywood from Wickes £24.99 was £15 a few months ago , disgustng increase in price, may look at backerboard alternatives now, have always use ply for overboarding floors.

6mm backer boards are down to £8.50 in topps, probably find them cheaper than that online well worth the change imo.

Can you use 6mm Backer Board in place of 18mm Ply? For instance, over floor boards etc? If so, it's gotta be a better route all round, surely!?!

I believe that 6mm are better to use on floors than 12 mm (density etc) but what size are the boards? and don't forget that bathroomboy has been going to a diy shed for his ply!

I use backerboards all the time now mate.

Change thickness depending on how straight yer boards are but i get away with 6mm on most of the floors.

The boards are 800 x 1500. So 3 boards costs 25 quid but you get 3.6 m2 instead of 2.9 m2 of ply.

0.7 of a m2 can make a big differnence....i'd love an extra inch or so myself 🙂

What method are you guys fixing these 6mm backer boards, by the time a screw goes through them surely it aint grippin much?

Sorry but i disagree, had this discussion years ago on another forum, sure its gripping the timber below but when screw is countersunk its holdin about 3mm of the backerboard, same goes for those who think 6mm ply is enough:yikes:

You use a flexible cement based adhesive onto your substrate then you fix the hardi 250 into that and screw it down...

Certain adhesive manufacturers like BAL etc will not guarantee their adhesives onto this BUT mapei will......use Keraquick or Keraquick with latex plus....

i never use ply now always hardie baker 6mm glued and screwed, easy to transport, cut and fix, ctd do a good price all the time and you can stock up when its on offer.

i knew it!!! ive not done much floor tiling recently but i swore ply was about £15 splod but no! was flippin £25!

prob was i gave a quote including the ply etc so i was out of pocket! 😳
lesson learned - keep up to date with prices before including them in your quote!

come to think of it tho, theres no way im forking out £25 for a sheet of 12mm ply ever again

seems i may give backerboards a go after all... plus the smaller "stepup" wil seem more appealing to costomers

i do believe i just spoke out loud to myself right there ^^ ah well, must be old age setting in

Wickes and Travis Perkins are part of the same Group and have the same suppliers, so the quality is the same. More often than not, Wickes retail price is cheaper than Travis Perkins' discounted price to trades. But it's always wise to do regular price checks - I've noticed some of Wickes' prices rising i.e. plywood, so I'm getting new quotes from the other local merchants. The moral is "Be loyal to yourself and your pocket - if you're loyal to a merchant, expect to be ripped off and out of pocket!"

hardi is £7.99 for me at topps.
i glue it then screw it and tape the joints.
the only thing i dont like about taping the joints is that is creates bumps in the floor!!!! does anyone do floors without taping? surely if its staggered over boards and screwed the boards wont move independently?
