I have a downstairs loo to tile in glass mosaic which has been supplied by the customer, they would like me to tile the ceiling which i set out first in order to tile it then i can drop the walls down and keep it all square, lots of cutting involved so I laid the sheets out on the kitchen floor so i could pre cut the mosaic before tiling the ceiling
I was surprised to find that the sheets were so far out of square that i cant use them, my apprentice and i then went through 20 boxes of Original Style tortoise shell mosaic and found 6 boxes to be so bad that we have asked the customer to return them to the shop and get replacements has any one else found this with this brand? the mosaic is mesh backed 20mm x 20mm on 300x 300 sheets:thumbsdown:

Not used them Gary.. Sounds like a poor batch.. Do original style buy in from outsource suppliers..?

i use mosaic's all the time gary, and have used original style a lot ,i find that there are lots of makes that on first inspection look ok but are really bad, i tend to square them up as i work with them!! you have to or you will end up re-jecting everything mate, if they are mesh backed set them in the addy and the moisture from it will make the mesh relax then you can move them with the straight edge of your trowel!! hope this help's you mate

ps they original style are a great make from the west country boy's, very popular at the moment

Thanks gooner, I would normally square up the mosaic and often do with paper faced but beleive me some sheets are 10mm out of sq the jobs hard enough as it is without having to straighten up 60 sheets of mosaic i have some pictures i will resize them and add them when i charge my camera:thumbsup:

Sounds like a nice one there Gary, i have a big bathroom to tackle next week and there is bad looking mosaics in there too but luckily only 5 mt2 of them among some banana shaped ceramics, lol.

heres some pics of the mosaic I have sent back and there are some pictures of the goodsheets too

gary these are the same tiles that i did the swimming pool in the JOB OF THE YEAR competition that i only got one vote for ( FIX ) :yikes: so you can now see the job in different light mate, i might get two vote's now

ps it show's that my way of fixing as i explained does work with wonky donkey mosaic's, you can look at the proof now on J O T Y

It is nice to work with mosaics that just lay perfect, but this is not the norm.
Typically they need some tweeking to get them right.
It is handy that those particular mosaics will have the mesh soften when laid into the mortar.

Just did a lot of mosaic over the holidays and a sheet would often have a twisted piece that needed the lugs (not mesh but poly bonded lugs) cut to set it straight or a chipped one, or a casting defect, etc.
It was annoying, but needed to be done.
All the more challenging as the floor was graded to multiple drains and one doesn't want snakey groutlines over the long runs.

I am always willing to move the mosaic about to get nice work but not 20mm so they are going back to the supplier

your gonna have fun with them gary!! hope you have got a decent meterage price on them mate ;0)

yes same as mate the pool i did in north yorkshire was the same you have to cut every one with a very sharp craft knife and it's a real pain, but we charge a bit more to reflect that!!

Well Gooner is right about Original style, very good company and replaced the out of square mosaic without quibbling:thumbsup:started tiling the job today pictures to follow

I do pretty much the same as Gooner with wonky sheets, I dont do a mosaic job without my trusty small Wickes knives, to open out any rows/ columns that are bit off. Luckily Ive not come across a batch of really bad ones so far.

missy T

i also use a Stanly to open the sheets but i am with Gary on this one they needed to go back. if you pay top cash you do not expect to have sub standard materials.

Funnily enough I am using the very same tile on an artistic mosaic commission right now, I am very pleased the way they can be cut, nice and neat, no splintering...

Hi Gary, there are a few things on the job that make me never want to see a piece of tile again, and this is one of them. Fighting with Twisted Sister sheets like that are enough to send a guy over the edge. I'm glad the supplier made good on this for you, and the job looks great.
