Hi,
Recently did a 35 m hond and filled travetine job and sealed twice with HG impregnater.
customer wanted lots on which resulted in over application.
I've spent a day trying to get excess off with hg spot and stain remover and still its left a tackyness on top which dirt attracts too. better than before though. Did a job with fila and applied liberally 3 times and never had a problem.

The customer wants a protective coating on the floor which she can just mop and maintain. After second seal dirt just stuck to it and has to be scrubbed hard to be removed. probably have to spend another day trying to get best of it off but reluctant to using more hg products?

Has anyone else come across this problem and know how to put right

Any help appreciated.

First thing mate your the tiler not the customer it is not up to the customer to tell you how much sealer to put on. Remember that from now on as you have found it has come back and bit you.

I used to use HG and it can be nasty stuff if used incorrectly same as all sealers. I use Aquamix now all the time, their Enrich n seal is the best sealer on the market as far as I am concerned and best thing is you can treat the floor and it does not overcome you with fumes.

Well if it has now hardened onto the Travertine it will be fun and games to try and remove the excess try the HG sealer remover and see if it helps you will have to keep agitaing it and not let it dry out as it will cause you even more problems.

I had to look at a floor once where the tiler had used an LTP product and the product had dried patchy on the travertine would not come back with their remover in the end we used cellulose thinners used in car spraying and this removed most of the excess but wouldnot recommend this if you are not experienced due to high flash point and you need to work quick and wash of quickly.

Try the HG stuff first.

The key to working with sealers is do small areas a a time dont allow it to dwell to long wipe of excess with a cotton rag then dry with another clean rag.

The key is to remove as much as possible. This is best done with a rotary scrubbing machine fitted with a nylon brush and as others have said keep the area wet. I would also try and get hold of a wet vac for this job because it will help you get the most excess out of the stone. Remember whichever sealer you try next I would try and makle sure the carrier is the same a the Hagesan product you used. LTP will probably work better in this particular situation.

Thanks everyone for replies.
I've contacted HG and they said once excess is off use either shine finish or golv polish. They did'nt say I needed to re seal with original hg impregnator. no sure

The travetine know looks half matt and sheen where the impregnator is but it's no longer tacky. thinking of going over again with srcub brush and stain spot remover.

I've noticed they do products for removing everything so I'm a bit concearned that these will need stripping after a period. Anyone used these products or know which out of the two is better to maintain or will I need to strip them and re apply for customer every year

Kev, Which Ltp product do you recomend?

cheers

Sorry mate I meant Lithofin??? It must be the Jet Lag!!!

You need Wetdecs or Dave for this mate they both have more experience than me with Lithofin. The reason I reccommended it in this case was because according to the Spec sheets they both use solvent carriers so are likely to be accepted much better because there will still be sealer in the stone because you won't get it all out. Aqua Mix is not really suitable in this case because it's carriers are different:thumbsup:

Hey Guy's

I just scanned the thread for a good tip but this wasn't present so get your pencils out:

When applying sealants and it starts to pool on certain denser areas of the tile and wont sink it. Get a white terry towel or cloth, just make sure that there isn't any ink on it to bleed out and apply the same sealer to the towel.

Use this to wipe off any excess. It will even work on sticky sealant maybe not on really old stuff but none the less this technique works so anyways carry some terry nappys with you.

Thanks for the tip on removing sealer Marble master!
I used Hg spot stain remover which I had to use twice. cost me 2 days work and customer seems reasonably happier now with floor athough still not perfect.
Please anyone using Hg impregnator don't do what I did and leave it assuming the stone will soak it up. Make sure any excess is removed after 5 minutes of application.

cheers,
Steve
