hey folks. some of you may remember me from a while back as i used to post pretty frequently before i came to australia for a year. Im still in Oz now but am returning to the UK in 7 weeks.

I done the NETT course about 2 years ago and completed about 10 or so jobs which all went well and I was happy with (so were the customers more importantly lol).

I registered my company, based in Dundee in Scotland, and things were going well. I decided to come to Oz and put the tiling on hold as I felt I'd never get the opportunity to do summin like this again (coming up for 26 years old).

Anyway, I want to get back to tiling when i return but was wondering how bad the tiling industry has been hit by the recession and if it will return to what it once was.

I really enjoy tiling and get a great deal of satisfaction out of it and so want to continue learning and becoming a really good tiler.

I was wondering if I should maybe look at shadowing a tiler when i get back to hone my skills and to get better or should I just try and take off where I left?

I hope to be a more permentant fixture on the forums when I return to the uk again as it helped me tremendoulsy once I had completed the brilliant NETT course.

thanks. its good to be back!!

also, whilst working over here (brickies labourer) i noticed the tilers never use wet cutters and only use grinders. does anyone here not use a wet cutter and only uses an angle grinder?

I remember you mate, visa ran out then, hope you enjoyed it. can't tell you what to do, you'll have to play it by ear when you get back, good luck

:welcome:back.

They've got that much dust over in OZ a bit more off an angle grinder wont make any difference.
Which part of the country are you coming back to and why come back at all -done your time!

John.

:welcome:back
towards the north of scotland seems to be fairing better than the central areas at the moment, where work is really slow the now!

Hello and welcome back.....like riding a bike....you will slot back in but it's not as busy for some as it was..

Well Im in Dundee, I found that its building up contacts ie plumbers etc that have won me jobs, there is work out there, people are using the credit crunch as an excuse and other aren't, recommendations are the best jobs to get and thats what I am finding so I must be doing somethibng right !!

Thanks for all the replies folks. appreciated

il have done all i wanted to do here so i'll be returning. i like it here but its not home. I've been doing brickies labouring, my mates uncle has his own business here so he gave me work as soon as i came over which was handy as its tough getting a job here at the moment. i've been in Sydney since I arrived and am doing the coast in 2 weeks, cant wait.

i still have a LOT to learn in tiling and am eager to progress in the trade. hopefully i'll get a few jobs when i come back and can maybe shadow a tiler (if one will let me lol) for a while to get better.

my ultimate goal is to have my own successful business and to work for myself would be a dream lol...\

thanks again... :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

fao TUBS - you been tiling long mate? where about in dundee you from?

Welcome back to the forums. Would love to go to Oz but I wouldn't hack the flight, so perhaps a long drive for me one week (or two).

Tiling is tough, as with any trade right now but some are really making it right now even through this recession. Which IMO will get a bit worse before it starts to get better dispite the BBC's bullshyte about it being over now. LMFAO@Their comments. Tut.

Make sure you're getting your name in the shops. Tile Giant (or whatever it is up there) might be able to help out with a little work, as they're our new sponsors for tile and have been a great help to many of the members already.

Anyway. I hope you have lots of pics to upload. 🙂

cheers dan... i'll get some fotos up once i;ve done the coast in a few weeks.

one of my mates step dad owns a tiling shop in Dundee so I'm gonna see if my friend can introduce me when i get back and hopfeully he can pass on some work. also another friend works in a tile shop and was giving me some jobs before i left so hopefully he still works there and can do the same

i'd really like to shadow an experienced tiler though as there is some things im not 100% on etc.
