i see this guy on there the other day dave and thats one that inspired me to ask about diffrent meths of fixing stone ,in diffrent countrys mate its interesting, we allways grab the moral high ground and think we are right, when some of these countrys have been working with these matr longer than us ???

Dave,

I have commented on that video before here at the forum. Yes, that method for the floor and for the walls is common in certain markets. I have attened numerous classes, including one for forensic tile inspections and failure analysis, and the instructors always have a grab-bag full of horror stories coming out of Florida.

Yes i know i posted it a while back...but once i had seen more of his install vids then i posted some more here.....

So you hear plenty horror stories from florida then Rob?.

i'v stripped plenty of bathrooms etc that have been tiled years ago and at least 30% have been dot and dabbed and interestingly still secure on the walls!:yikes:

i have commented loads of times on here before that i know older fixers who still use dot and dab methods.Personally i will stick to what i know best and it isnt dot and dabbing

with the floor i take it the mortar mix will set and the thinset will adhere to thatas it sets.I have seen builders using a simillar method when slabbing, using dry mix of sand and cement.I wonder how many failures are had by theses methods?

I know the method is used bri...but check his coverage on the bathroom floor with his dry pack..????

Not a very fair comment...i have plenty by fixers of all walks of life.
no your misunderstanding me i was refering to thinset /screed/thinset as a style used abroad and bought in by lads from
abroad who in my opinion are great lads, and not wot you are suggesting thanks, i learned my tiling from italianos and my dad was maltese

I really appreciate your reply dave...but that could be read another way and it was reported to us...So glad you cleared that up though..

The market in Florida is really depressed, and I've had guys tell me that installation rates are lower than a buck a foot:yikes:, with the setting material included in that rate.:yikes::yikes:

Cheap thinset is sold in Florida supposedly at the $5 a 50 lb. bag mark. There can't be much portland in that stuff. A bag of play sand costs $4. 😀

So they spot fix to save on adhesive costs.......nice earner hey!!

I know of a company that have had a hotel, shower areas and toilets, and a nightclub floor all dot and dabbed.

The dance floor lasted about a month before high heels started breaking thru the tiles. 100 meters of floor are now a right off.

Problem being that the owner doesn't want to spend the cash to get the job done properly.

times tough out there rob !

That's true. I've had guys tell me that the only way anyone makes any money to do the entire house in a couple of days. A lot of houses are SOG there and the enitre floor will be tiled-no carpet- and three or four guys will go in and do the entire thing in two days or so.:mad2:

i think thats the same with most hotels builders etc

Here's the same company, advertising for $1.25 a foot for large format.
