Are you getting any work from your local tile shop that you buy adhesive from and tiles etc?

Not had a job from mine this year.😛rrr:Had a word last week.The leading question was have you been busy? yes the reply but no-one wanting work done?😛rrr:

I know my topps is taking a thrashing and the excuse is its after xmas. Surprisingly there is a fair bit of private work going on but a lot of sites have slowed. Have seen this b4 shops are slow but because there are a few of them about the work is still there for us.

your obviously not bribing or brown-nosing the staff enough lol!
am getting a fair bit the now,especially a few supply and fit jobs when there moaning about the prices they have to pay,usually seals the deal when i can use my trade and save them a few quid!

Used to get work from a local independent where I bought there materials, It then suddenly stopped. It then gave me the freedom to buy materials where I can get the best price rather that rely on some rank addy, I won't be beholdent to anyone any more just do my own thing

Bit hit and miss with work from tile shops I visit, get the odd job passed my way when I threaten to take my business elsewhere ! They always have their favourites & I have been reliably informed that one gives most of their work to a particular tiler in return for back handers

Thats where it stands, there's guys that do a few posts on here for work probably never heard of again. If I had work to pass on it would be with guys on here, the regular ones.

The same with the shop I used go to and spent loads of money, we tiled a subway and I told the mate who had the job to go to this shop for the addy, some people have bad memories

I agree, tile shops tend to have their favourites usually the guys who have been going there for many years. Also of the 4 tile shops in Halifax, one has its own employed fixer and another has it's own tiler ( he is married to the woman who owns the shop )

But I have had a LOT of work from them. They phone me when my cards are running low.

I have ALL there slightly damaged bags of addy at next to nothing prices., and they phone me to tell me wot they got as well.

So all in all........a nice bunch of guys, and girl :smilewinkgrin:

I haven't ever had a recommendation from a tile shop or merchant.

All the decent tile shops are a minimum of 3/4 an hour away anyway, so the chances are that I wouldn't be too interested in travelling that distance to a customer local to them, unless the job was a reasonable size.

To be fair, I'm not in the same league as some of you guys anyway, and if I'm to be competing as a regular tiler, I've got a fair bit of catching up to do. Competent with the simpler stuff, but.....

Builder's merchants, most don't pass work on, as it's usually the tradesman who's buying the materials in the first place. I have been known to strike up a conversation with private clients before now in the hope of getting a job, never worked though.

I have got recommendations via estate agents etc, Such clients have in turn recommended me to others etc, so the trail goes on.

Very bizarrely went to one of the 2 tile shops I use today ! They actually asked for some of my cards :yikes: Have sent quite a few customers their way and have purchased quite a few grands worth of tiles since just before Christmas ! They supplied tiles for my curved wet room : I e-mailed them photos upon completion !
Things may be looking up if they are asking for my cards !! About time !!

I seem to get more jobs from the shop than other advertising at moment.
Always get offered a cup of tea when I go in, and occasionally a client walks in and the shop pass them straight onto me for fitting.
Seems to work well, no back handers or anything, just a good old chat with the staff and manager, buy the adhesive from them and send clients in there.

was in today paying some bills and asked if they had any work for me...they thought i was still working with that builder and had my own work...anyway they will pass my cards out and said that they had being doing so...actually got a call this moring...so good news for a change.

I use two on particular,get plenty from one and none from the other exept great prices on addy and tiles etc,cant complain at the minute but who knows whats around the corner !!
