Re: North East Tiling Training - Tyne and Wear

I finished my tiling course at NETT a couple of weeks ago (currently doing the plastering course).

I would recommend the course at NETT to anyone who wants to learn how to tile, whether it is for DIY or with a view to setting up your own business.

The course is well structured, well ran and packed full of information. Although there is a lot to take in over a relatively small space of time, the way the course is structured (listen, watch then do) means the information sinks in without you even realising it. I did the 9 day course (4 day tiling, 1 day Natural Stone and 4 day advanced) which has definately given me the confidence to get out there and get on with it.

I have also completed the Plumbing course that NETT offers and am currently in the process of completing the Plastering course. These courses are structured in exactly the same way and give you all of the information and confidence you need to be able to make a living from any or all of the.

I would like to give a big thanks to Darren and Tracey (and also Mick, Alex and Derek) for all of their help over the last few weeks, and hopefully giving my life a complete change of direction - from sitting on a production line in a factory to doing something a bit more enjoyable!!

Mick.

Re: North East Tiling Training - Tyne and Wear

Go for it Mick, i did a couple of years ago and never looked back......

Re: North East Tiling Training - Tyne and Wear

Thanks for the feedback, nice to here you still are doing well after a couple of years

Re: North East Tiling Training - Tyne and Wear

These guys are brilliant, I have mentioned them in other responses. I did the 4 day tiling and 1 day natural stone course and the 5 day plastering and coving course. Gave me enough confidence to set up myself but I will be going back at somethime to do some more and the bathroom installation course too.

I start my first (paid) job (plastering) on Monday :0 🙂

Oh, also ordered a load of tools from them late Tuesday and they arrived yesterday afternoon!! 🙂

Many thanks guys, hope to see you all again in the not too distant future.

Re: North East Tiling Training - Tyne and Wear

Thanks Glyn, best of luck with the plastering job, you have my personal email just in case you need anything, let us know how you get on
Regards
Darren

Re: North East Tiling Training - Tyne and Wear

I did the 4 day tiling and the 1 day natural stone in August 2008. I've been tiling on a part time basis ever since earning reasonable money and enjoying it (almost) all of the time.

The finding of work is usually an issue and I have tried most of the methods mentioned on these boards. Local paper advertising is expensive and not terribly productive but IMO probably necessary to get your name known (marketing). Since I'm not full time a sign written van isnt financially viable. The best sources of work are definately reccomendations from existing customers and other trades. I have a friendly kitchen fitter but have fallen out with a plumber so need to recruit another !

The NETT course will give you a thorough grounding but be realistic about your goals early on as some jobs won't be for you and a good reputation will take a while. There will be times when a job takes longer than you thought but just bite the bullet and get it right, it will pay you in the end.

The main reason for this post is to give an example of the type of work you can do after Darrens brilliant course and a little experience..............

I got a call after being reccomended by my kitchen fitter mate and visited the customer. He had a bathroom to complete and the original tiler that quoted hadnt turned up and wouldnt answer his phone. Dolphin had quoted £38k for the complete job !!!! but he had fitted the room out himself with quality fittings re boarded the walls himself, tanked the wetroom area etc etc..

So I quoted to........ Supply and fit 40 sq mtrs of 9mm thick porcelain tiles to the walls and floors. Supply approx 30 linear metres of chromed trims and all adhesives and anti bacterial grout and Silicon. There was UFH but that was supposed to be down when I arrived (it wasn't and I did it). There were 20 x 20mm holes to cut and 30 pieces of the chrome trim to fit.

Anyway the job was completed, much to the customers delight and he even paid me extra without me asking. My point (finally) is that you CAN reach this standard but don't run before you learn to walk this really should not be your first job. Good luck.

Re: North East Tiling Training - Tyne and Wear

just to say i did the 9 day tiling course at NETT aswell as the 5 day plastering and plumbing courses and they were all excellent, very well structured and easy to understand and pick up, all the tutors and staff are very friendly and know their stuff. I would recommend NETT to anybody looking to do a tiling , plastering and/or plumbing course. Darren and all his team at NETT are great and they all make the courses and NETT what it is

Re: North East Tiling Training - Tyne and Wear

Completed the plumbing coarse nearly 2 weeks ago and only wish i'd done it sooner, the team at NETT are all really friendly and the knowledge i came away with was brilliant. The coarse has already paid for itself in the extra work i've now completed and have i've already got one of my mates interested in doing the coarse too. Thanks again Darren for the extra info and to Tracy and Colin. Another happy customer.

Hi everyone, just finished the 9 day course at NETT and really enjoyed it.The course is well organised and professionally run with no time wasted and i would highly recomend it to anyone wishing to train up as a tiler. In the first week there is a lot of info to take in but everthing is backed up with printed notes so you can go over it as many times as you need and Darren is always happy to answer any questions you may have.As well as learning about all the various types of tiles and adhesives etc Darren also gives loads of advise on starting up on your own and how to run a successful business.I've attached some pics of my own handy work to give you an idea of some of the work on the course and i'd just like to say thanks to Darren n Tracey for all their help and advice.

Hi all, due to the expansion of our company and our new 10,000, square foot unit

North East Tiling Training (NETT) is now trading as UK Trades Training)

We cover courses in Tiling, Plastering, Plumbing, Kitchen Fitting, Bricklaying, Electrics and Painting and Decorating

The new name is more appropriate to our business, all our new courses run with the same standards and course content as the Tiling course which we have ran for over 7 years now and created many successfull tilers who are still on this forum today from all those years ago.

Hope everyone is OK from the past and look forward to meeting new learners looking for a career in the trades

Best Regards
Darren

Hi Dan
Same website just changed the name we are trading under as tiling is too specific for what we do now, ive still put a sort of strap line under so as people kno we are still the same company as North East Tiling Training, dont want to loose my identity and reputation that we have built up over the years.

Any chance you could do a new sponsored banner for me saying UK TRADES TRAINING like our web banner and say NETT under it so people still know on here who we are and the feedback on here still relates to us
Im sure you can come up with something
Darren

I'm sure I can

I'll see what I can knock up for you mate.

Pleased to hear you're branching out.

All the good industries of yesteryear had their bases in the North East.
You can't beat tradition.

All the very best wishes in the new place, Darren - and may all your most ambitious dreams come true 🙂

Thanks Guys
Hope everything is going well Dale in Spain, not missing home yet, the answer is probably no
Best of luck over there
Regards
Darren

So today I started my course with Darren.
I thought I would give a brief run down of each day so others could get a feel for what's on offer and what you can do on a course, if you're interested.
This post is not to instigate a "for or against short courses" debate. That's been done enough. This post is to let future members know what Uk Trades Training has to offer.
Day 1
Arrived and was welcomed with a brew while we did the mandatory health & safety etc.
Then into the tiling area.
Today we have learnt how to set out a room, both walls and floors.
We've practiced dry and wet cuts, straight and curved. Cuts for round obstacles like pedestals etc.
We've used dry and wet cutters, nippers, levels and covered datum lines, floors and walls that run out of plumb/square.
I have set out allowing for obstacles etc an area equivalent to 5 separate rooms inc. corridors etc. The rooms are not all square and walls not all plumb. We've covered splash backs including what to do when counters are level, walls out etc
Tomorrow it's tiling those rooms and also a lot of class room work reference back grounds etc.
The amount of material we have covered today is huge, but very clear.
I've not slept for 3 nights due to being in hospital with my son..... Yet I could still understand it all. Hopefully I'll remember it too ;-)

Hi Andrew,

I'm currently saving my pennies to come and do the same course so am looking forward to hearing the rest of your thread!

Do you have any previous experience in this type of work or is it all new to you? I have spent most of my working life in kitchens so have no experience at all!

Are you doing the 1 or 2 week course?

Hi
I'm doing 5 day course.
Have tiled in my own house but that's it.

Day 2
Started tiling my wall. This has a sink and pedestal on it and the walls are crap. So preparation needed.
Did 6 rows of tiles in between the bath and sink. 2mm spacing throughout. Cut tiles around the sink including splash back. Scribing them around the curvature of the sink. Tiled around bath. Both required curved cuts.
Then did diamond pattern border, including plunge cut and inset smaller diamond shape. Fairly quick moving as the top of the border needed to be checked for level before the adhesive set.
Clean up.
Then into class room. Really good talk on running a tiling business, how to get extras in a job, pricing and type of work to go for.

Tomorrow is continuing our walls with more design work, angled cuts etc.

Ok better do info on day 3 before I fall asleep!
Day 3

Continued with our walls. Was set a design to tile as a feature. Included angled cuts, 2 different colours and plunge cuts.
Then tiled rest of the wall, around sockets and window.
Laid

Sorry, pressed wrong button....
Laid out flooring designs and re-capped on setting out floors.
I successfully set out floor tiles in a 3 room layout, including corridors connecting the rooms and obstacles like pedestals, toilets etc!
I've got no problem in setting a floor out now with the way I've been shown.

Tomorrow we tile the window, do all trim, grout up and.....tear it down ready for the next course. Also doing some measuring up and quoting.

I'm attending the Friday not this week but next due to personal circumstances. The program for the Friday will be natural stone, wet rooms, decoupling, waterproofing etc

Day 4
Floor tiling training. Then finishing our bays including windows, reveals, trims etc. we also did 3 way mitres for trims which I found quite easy.

Grouted everything up, used the washboy to clean up.

Then finished the day with recap questionnaire and measuring tasks.

As I said above, my 5th day will be next Friday.

Thanks for doing this review Andrew, be sure to let us know how the natural stone day goes on Friday!

What are you planning on doing with your new found skill?
