Tiling onto MDF

Well I never ! after all these years I learn something new !

I was approached to tile a bathroom, then I was informed the tiles were 600 x 600 Porcelain and the walls ????...MDF.
I said no way ! , Client accepted my reasons .
I also said I was too busy to do the job anyway.

Today a voicemail message telling me... " I have checked with the adhesive manufacturer and yes you can tile to MDF as long as its sealed"

So there you go, I thought I would share this with you as we all need to learn something new.....any , Anyone want a bathroom to tile ...nice flat smooth walls .!

What type of sealer, or do they mean primer?

Haway then ,,, who is the adhesive comp.. 🙂

Not sure yet, I havent replied. I will find out tomorrow.
I know some companies such as BAL have stated in the past you can tile to MDF with Whitestar ...but in a wet area and with 600 x 600 porcs ??

My mate loves building shower out of MDF, it doesn't matter how many times i tell him/ moan/suggest/refuse to tile it he won't listen!!

Actually weber states Weber fix WR, weber fix wr plus, Weber set plus, Weber set SPF, Weber set plus with AD250 , weber set rapid plus with AD250

Small areas only !

I priced a job a couple of years ago & the client had over boarded his caber deck floor with 18mm MDF.

Told him it wasn't suitable to tile to & he informed me that in Germany that's how they lay their floors.

He said, "you just put this glue on it then tile as normal"

I foned Bal technical as he wouldn't believe what I was telling him & they told me, do not tile it!!

Good to learn, if the adhesive manufacturers say it's ok then you should be covered in the event of failure, but I'm not so sure I would want to do it, just something in my head saying it's wrong. But I am willing to change. I think........

Its not April is it??

Hahaha!!

This subject grabbed my attention, as I have a cloakroom shower to do. Noticed the windowsill was made of MDF, and there is also no ventilation.

No doubt the windowsill will be gloss painted, so I guess it is sealed in someway. But if any moisture where to get in the MDF wouldn't it swell up. And for tiling purposes, even just the primer alone would be enough to make it swell up wouldn't it? And I'm assuming these are dry internal walls being talked about, not wetrooms or balconies!!

Of course you can tile onto MDF. Ive done it in my shower...... twice.... so far 🙂
