Hi all

am shaun been tiling for about 8 years self employed from mirfield west yorkshire

am doing a job for a customer whos builder made a **** up on a massive scale by getting a tiler to tile directly on to an anhydrite screed having not sanded it and used cement based adhesive , it failed i had to re-tile it also the same builder tiler tiled in a separate part of the house onto (loft board, partical board )its tongue and groove greeen in colour 22mm thick as a waxy coating ( see attached ), now a tiles also cracked on there and i've taken it up to change it reviling this board , now i have always been under the impression you can not tile directly onto this board and always over plyed . am i right if so the whole floor is doomed .

thanks looking forward to your comments

Hi thanks for your reply , the builders saying there the bees knees and that they defo can be tiled on , hes got me questioning my own judgement , think its cos hes older and the extension on the house its really quite good, but i've always over plyed this particular floor , can't see how the adhesive can bound to the waxy surface

The builder is trying to cover his backside, the tiles will have to come up, overboard as above, and tell him to naff off 😉

The only way you can tile direct to green sheets (caber deck flooring) is with an elastomeric adhesive & I would still advise against this.
Clean up them boards, make sure they are well fixed, prime & glue & screw with Hardie backer as said above..

Off topic what do you do with the joints when you lay hardie backer boards? How would you fill them in or is it ok to be just glued n screwed then tiled onto?

I just run a screed of adhesive over the joins, either when I lay the boards or when I fit the tiles.

I used to use standard scrim but hardie do sell there own scrim and the cheapest place I've found it was B&Q, when fixed run some addy over it....

its old house with the cellar so froor is a timber one. I'm thinking to put some screws in, prime it level it of with slc and then ditra on top.
