cracking
In petrochemistry, petroleum geology and organic chemistry, cracking is the process whereby complex organic molecules such as kerogens or long-chain hydrocarbons are broken down into simpler molecules such as light hydrocarbons, by the breaking of carbon-carbon bonds in the precursors. The rate of cracking and the end products are strongly dependent on the temperature and presence of catalysts. Cracking is the breakdown of a large alkane into smaller, more useful alkenes. Simply put, hydrocarbon cracking is the process of breaking a long chain of hydrocarbons into short ones. This process requires high temperatures.More loosely, outside the field of petroleum chemistry, the term "cracking" is used to describe any type of splitting of molecules under the influence of heat, catalysts and solvents, such as in processes of destructive distillation or pyrolysis.
Fluid catalytic cracking produces a high yield of petrol and LPG, while hydrocracking is a major source of jet fuel, diesel fuel, naphtha, and again yields LPG.

Last Dec tiled a small conservatory (13m) with 600mm porcelain tiles. Prior to tiling another contractor had laid wire type underfloor heating and gone over it with leveller. I believe the thin insulation sheets were installed as well. Last week I was called back as one 6 inch length of joint...

On a new extension, the client has asked my opinion on this. Originally there was one ensuite on the exterior side of the extension. It's now been boarded out in half so the client can get another toilet/wash room on the opposite side of the...
I had ceramic tile installed and 6 months later I noticed cracks in about a dozen tiles. The cracks form 2 straight parallel lines 3 ft apart. The contracter says it is a high traffic area and the tile I chose was poor quality. The store says the tile is good quality and that it wasn't...
I have installed a Riva subway wall tile in two large showers. 5/8" sheetrock, paper, chicken wire, floated tile installed with Ardex x4 thinset. Tile are without grout joints, lug on lug. I have hairline cracking under the glazing. I can see it but really cannot feel it through the glazing...
Hi All,
I'm on with tiling all my downstairs rooms with 60cm x 60cm High Gloss 9mm tiles. All was going when until recently I noticed a few tiles have cracked? They had been down a week or so without issue, no sign of cracking when I grouted them?. I spent a lot of time preparing the sub...

Hi, I’ve just had an extension added to my kitchen. The new kitchen space will be roughly half and half (total 56m2) with the original half having no UFH and the new half will have a wet system installed. I’ve bought 90cm x 15 cm tiles which I want laying in herringbone style. I’m now concerned...
I have a Rubi manual tile cutter which is quite new. It has been fine initially but now each tile I cut fragments at the top. I cut from the bottom up but three tiles in a row have cracked the corner off at the top. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? These are all standard straight cuts. Nothing...
Hi, We have recently had our bathroom updated and a new Brick nib wall put in and tiled. Within 6 weeks it had cracked on both sides and metal trim had come away. The bathroom renovator came back and replaced the tiles with new adhesive (type used in pools) but I have noticed after 3 weeks it...

Evening All,
I have recently had large format tiles installed 1200mm x 2400mm x 6 mm thick. All laid to a very good standard on top of UFH however 90 percent of the cut tiles have cracked. There is no other cracking on any full tiles or grout lines that suggest it’s structural.
I have attached...
Hi need advice. We had the wet UFH done topped with screed. Been a month since the screed was done. Cracks have appeared at a few places. Is putting Ditra Mat absolutely essential ?? Will it affect the heat coming up from the UFH ?? Do the cracks need to be fixed ??
Thanks
