Forget about meter rate...
I was replacing three half tiles as a facing on a shower base today. Tiles were off but I had to build the substrate up again, used two 300 x 300 tiles for 130mm cuts, sealed, fixed, grouted and siliconed for £75.
I'm hoping this is a record!:hurray:

i have cut tiles for diy customers in the past who were tiling there own bathrooms but had no cutters lol

tenner a cut...oh you need 6 cut thats 60 pounds please

I'm laying 600x150 timber effect porcelain this week, small buggers but i have 69m2 down in 3 days.I have near 200m2 in total to put down 🙁

I used those in a bathroom showroom last year, probably about 50m2. Hated doing the black grout.

I think it was closer to 50 🙁

I don't do any work for the tight fisted so and sos now.

When I had a tile showroom and people would bring back tiles they'd bought from me to cut - I'd put the money in the charity box!
Call me daft but I got more repeat sales then ripping people off.

When I was in the U.K. a customer in a restored Victorian house contacted me to see if I could replace ONE tile for him. He'd had a leak in the shower valve and they had to remove 1 600 x 600 porcelain tile, which had 4 holes to accomodate the valves and two outlet pipes. Plus it was a bit behind the shower screen on one edge.

He said he'd already had a tiler round and he broke a tile trying to cut the holes with an angle grinder, and as the customer only had one tile left, the tiler lost his bottle and said he couldn't do it.

Customer asked me if I could do it, and if I could get the Silicon on the shower screen to the same professional standard as what was there (it had been professionally siliconed). It was a fantastic looking bathroom, huge, with a vaulted ceiling. But absolute CRAP quality job. NO TANKING in the shower at all, and tiled onto plasterboard. The so-called British Standards.... 😛rrr:

I told him £100 and I would call in a professional to Silicon and he would want £45 (it was a 2 metre strip of Silicon along one side of the shower screen).

Customer didn't bat an eyelid when I told him the price, and was absolutely delighted with the finished job.

Now, that was the easiest £100 I've made tiling, but let's be honest, my siliconing mate made £45 for 5 minutes work. We're ALL in the wrong game... :mad2:

After I had finished a new house, the clients father asked if I could replace 1 tile on a fireplace. Tile was loose, whip it off and knock off the 5 blobs, refix(not with d&d lol) No grout as they were butted up. Literally 10 mins and he handed me €100.
You're :welcome:

My best ever was a resurant in edinburghs high st. Ladies toilet, walls and floor, started at 7am and finished at 2am following morning, was paid £1200 for that one, think the plumber got a grand for his efforts!

That is £63.15 per hour. Still not as good as £45 for 5 minutes siliconing one side of a shower screen...

It's not about ripping people off, it was delivering what the customer wanted, when he wanted it and using the correct materials.
He was very happy with the work and was happy with the cost.

i replaced 4 tiles in a club toilet about 4 weeks ago they asked how fast i could do it they needed to open i told them it wouldn't be that day, they said it had to be done told them i was busy it would be £200 to fit them in. did it took about 30mins got paid wish every job was like that:yikes:

Charging a premium is a requirement for some requests e.g. same day callout, out of hours or high risk etc.

You need to cover your time and the chance of any additional costs occurring to yourself.

If you go to do a one hour job then, depending on what time off day it is etc you are potentialy missing out on earning more elswhere. It costs you fuel, travel time to and back from job as well as the time you spent there. In addition to any hourly rate etc you are charging you need to make extra on top of that again as running a business is about making profit ontop of your costs, this means on top of your hourly wage too. If you aim to earn £20 per hour then this is a cost too Im afraid. You need to make extra on top of this to truley make your business viable and more than just getting by.

When doing any handy man work I need to charge £40 for the first hour to cover all the above , even it its a 5 min job as I have realised it costs me fuel, tools and time before and after the job. I get some customers who think my prices are too expensive but other are more than happy to pay. There is always someone willing to do the work cheaper and if customers are not happy with my price then they can get someone else to do the work. No hard feeling there. I value my time, skill and knowledge.

As a business none of us should ever feel obliged to give a standard one or two hours earnings (£10 per hour etc) as Its simply not worth it. You wont get far doing so as this is an employee rate not a business rate.

I understand some people may be happy just earning a wage but I try to operate as a business so this is how I have to look at things.

Charge what you must. Nobody knows your business better than you and if a customer feels you are charging too much then they will go elsewhere.

You get chancers charging at either end of the scale.

I've just charged £100 to replace 4 mosaic tiles in a swimming pool and it only took 10 mins,it was full at the time.It was for big gym that couldnt afford to close the pool. The customer supplied the adhesive which worked really well, just went back today to check the tiles hadnt come off(from outside the pool) as I had to check out the shower areas which both need to be regrouted.

I don't think I could hold my breath that long 🙁

Some nice earnings to be had at short notice work. Got a phone call one Saturday morning in a panic. A hotel was to be handed over and they needed seven 8x4 wall tiles replaced asap and the tiler wasn't answering his phone. Was there about an hour and a half and charged £80, and subsequently ended up getting the contractors work from then on.

Regrouts pay well too. Regrouted a 25m kitchen floor recently. The grout was very soft and crumbly and it raked out very very easily. Was there at 10 o'clock and finished for lunch time and got £120 for it.

You wonder why you slog hard all day for the same money, when you can do two or three jobs like that a day and make a grand a week. :drool5:
