Strange how everyone understands and sympathises when someone post's about how hard it is, how rubbish the prices are and how cheep labour is stopping them getting decent rates and work. Then someone puts balance to the discussion by saying they can still get decent rates and is branded "arrogant and showing a lack of compassion" I find this as another example of how many in the trade struggle to applaud good business sense, acumen and achievement! and to say someone can only command good rates because they live in an affluent area an insult to that tradesman's skills imo! Times are hard out there and there will be winners and losers, but we are all self employed and choose our own work and rates we want to work for. We all run or businesses differently and until the trade becomes licensed and regulated, then there will always be tradesmen being walked on and customers being rip-off by cowboys!

At the risk of sounding arrogant I'm busier than I've ever been and from a work perspective things couldn't be better. It's purely commercial work I'm doing and even though I was £3 per m2 dearer than the cheapest quote I've still been given the work as the company I'm subbying for have seen my work and know I do a good job.
The downside to this is it's night work, I'm working away all over the country on supermarket jobs and have only spent 6 nights at home since the 2nd January. I've got another month or so of this until we start an 1100m2 floor which is back to normal hours again, it's a case of taking the rough with the smooth. I do believe there is work out there at the right price it just depends what lengths you are prepared to go to get it.

i only started this thread , to get your opinions of the price the other comp had gone in at, i do know if i lived further south , my options would be much better
i blame my mum and dad for that, lol
i have lived and worked in london for a short time, but at nearly 50 im try to get work near home , but finding it hard with the prices around here,
i hav,nt said any one is arrogant , i take my hat of to them , and hope it continues for those who are busy
ive been offerd a job in kent today starting mid feb , and if nothing arises nearer home , then i shall be of on my jolly,s

To be honest, I am of the opinon that there is an air of arrogance and lack of compassion in what spanish tiler came up with, I personally know a tiler, who's work and ethic to ward this trade is impeccable, he is also well respected and revered on this forum, its a post code lottery, he should be on top money for what ever he does, BUT , due to glut of labour and down turn in work available ,combining what has already been stated on this thread sometimes he is having to cop what ever he can, if you are in an area where rates are still good, well good luck, what comes round goes round, almost 40 years of this trade seen bubbles pop on people a few times

I am sure if we met you would not think I was either arrogant or lacking in compassion, communication on a keyboard can be cold.

My Dad came to England to work from Spain and stayed here so I tend to not have a great deal of time for people who blame 'foreigners' for all the problems in the country.

I am in an area where rates vary across the range and lots of tilers and bathroom companies have packed in so I don't consider that I am in some sort of bubble.

maybe I should have just given the stock reply and got back to my paper work but I have an opinion so gave it.

Plenty of others on here will state they are doing well and have plenty of work on etc, etc - are they arrogant as well ?

Quite a few opinions in this thread people, all valid in their own right. Some posts are getting a little heated, can we please keep it friendly.

I can see both sides here, but surely the customers need to do their homework and get the standard 3 quotes and weigh up price, reputation, experience etc before they decide to whom they give the job. Hard times at the moment and the wheat and the chaff aren't getting separated:thumbsdown:

allso i think when you do high end work your more than likely going to be on one job for 2/3 weeks, meaning your not scratching round for work, and can afford to demand good rates, as opposed to the tiler that needs 10/12 jobs a month and prices to get every job..

Maybe i might be called arrogant etc, but i am the same as Rob ( spanish ).. my market is high end and i demand a good price for the work i turn out.. simple as that.. i will NOT compete with the cheap brigade.. take my price or move on... Simples as they say.. 🙂

Yes it is good to be able to do this but i have made my contacts and customer base over the years and they come back to me..

That is my take on it... So... back to the other point mentioned above... keep it cival and nice to other members please...
