when i use sealant,i grout first where sealant will be,do the rest and go back to seal.i always thought that i was giving enough time.anyway, was talking to my sister and she said her nextdoor neighbour is some kind of bathroom specialist and he said that you shoul always grout one day and go back next day to seal-i personally wouldnt but do any of you tilers go back another day and if so,why??espescially if job some distance away,it be time consuming and costly.

i seal after grouting cause where i seal there`s no grout ie movement joints ,around bath if no trim , around window frames. :clock:

i seal before grouting gets better hold and only takes half hour or so to cure and then grout, and you should always use high modulous silcone in areas of humidity.

if you grout after sealing you are defeating the object for sealing ,what will happen is the grout will sit on top of the sealant in the grout gaps and this will not connect with the sealant therefore you will have leaks everywhere when the bath is being used ,speaking as an experienced fitter i would say that is a big NO NO

I've tried sealing first but dont you find the edge of the seal begins to lift due to the abrasion of the grout? It must affect the seal and looks a bit messy too...

I dont grout where im gonna seal, but grout near the areas first, than by the time ya finish grouting the grout near where ya gonna seal has gone off enough to seal. Just make sure its dry with kitchen roll.

If you seal over grout in movement joints, surely your not creating a movement joint?

then you wet your finger and push/pull finger up grout joint to pressure the grout to stick to the grout ,i wouldnt really class this as a movement joint kiddo

same as you D,always before grouting, bath full of water seal and push sealant into vertical lines.Following day pull plug and grout.Sealing over grout does absolutely nowt,if the grout separates from the bath so does the sealant.

when sealing aroung baths half fill bath with water before sealing this will put bath at half stress thus when sealant dries and bath is used the selant does'nt over stretch and split

well ill tell yeh something ,ive never heard of that before ,you must have left some jobs with some leeks ,its known that this way doesnt work,oh sorry didnt i mention id fill the bath aswell, and all them indentations when youve pushed the Silicon in to the grout gaps ,i bet yeh that looks s...e when its grouted up

whos talking about siliconing on top of grout ,we are talking about a 3 mm joint every so often ,its the safest way to do it ,your not going to grout the tiles to the bath are yeh then Silicon

thanks lads for all your advice.seemed to have caused some controversy.as with all trades though, theres always disagreements.never thought of sealing bath night before, then grouting next day.suppose theres always tips you come across, where you think, why didnt i think of that!!.thats why this forum is ideal.thanks again.

sorry lads, dont want to stir things up again but was just thinking-for those of you who seal internal corners of walls in bathrooms,do you not grout that vertical joint then??

just thought I would have ago with this one aswell!! I have one of the better half's hairdryers in my van so that AFTER grouting I can Silicon the same day whats the point in going back for 10mins work!?! only trouble with that is that when the hairdryer packs in you have to buy your lass a new one so that you can have her old one!!!

I used to grout the areas near where I needed to Silicon first, then grout the rest of the job, then dust off a little near where I needed to Silicon using fresh 'blue roll' (the big blue tissue stuff or similar) then Silicon.

Thank god dan!!!! Thats my way of doin it, wouldnt dream of grouting up to a Silicon line. And i also use the half bath of water method to put movement halfway and not overstretch Silicon.

I must have been totally cr*p at it then,20 yrs of sealing first then grouting never 1 come back

Never tried sealing first but sounds good, i always have trouble getting the sealent to stick when i go on top of grout (unless i come back the next day) have also done the hairdryer thing but that don't work for me either!!

Kin hate sealing, has always caused me problems but i am pretty sure i am doing something wrong.

Top Tip

*The sealant comes out the pointy end of the tube*

Varley........stop it!!! as if i would fall for that one... comes out the pointy end, no way, don't make me laugh 🙂
