Gypsies/Hawkers/tinkers/.pikey's..

I have said for a few years now that i refuse to work for these peeps.. getting paid is 99% a nightmare...


But tomorrow i start 35 mtrs of Star Galaxy Granite ( Not quartz) and UFH...From PHG.. but i am getting paid by kitchen comp..:smilewinkgrin: ( i hope )..



Do you work for these type of customers..? and if so, do you get paid up front etc..?

I did a 30m floor for a well known family in the Newark area a couple of years ago, the house was immaculate and they obviously weren't short of a quid or 2, but the whole time I was there I was convinced I wasn't getting paid, finished about midday on the friday and ended up having to do a couple of hours of other little jobs before they would give me my money!!!! Always wanting something for nothing, did get paid though but, wouldn't want to be working for them again any time soon.

I did a job for one a couple of years back, work was quiet at the time so took a chance. To cut a long story short I only spoke to him over the phone, he left a key with his neighbour and I cracked on with it. I'd gone by the time he came back and he rang me that night to say call back the next day and he'd leave money with his neighbour......... True to his word he did, plus a £20 tip for a job well done, happy days!

never, never, never will i work for these people, we have alot of them round our way, and i can normally weed them out be the accent they have, its not irish, or scottish, its well pikey accent, you proberly know what i mean.......nearly got caught out the other day, a lass rang me to quote 30m2 floor, she had a hint of a pikey accent but i wasn't quite sure then she told her name was 'billy joe' and the address was a well known pikey camp, so i was suddenly booked up for the next 10 years.
when i was younger i new a few travellers, and there not nice people to know, there sole purpose in life is to make as much money as possible by what ever means possible, and given half a chance they will rob you blind.

Not even if I were almost destitute and couldn't feed my family, would I take the chance of not getting paid by someone that doesn't have to play by the same rules as everyone one else.

I was involved in quite a large job that turned out to be for the traveling fraternity and several years later, I'm still waiting to get paid........!!

It isn't on a site... this hawker owns a very successful recycling company... and owns the over half million pound house..i am tiling.. and it stands in it's own grounds and paddocks etc..

but still a pikey..:lol:

At first glance I thought it was a Sher song (Gypsies, tramps, and theives) same thing imo, my first death threat came from one of these noble travelers. Never got paid, on a lighter note I never got killed either. my second experience of having a contract put on me, came from a Turk. So I try to steer clear of them, both Gypsies and Turks, Especially Turkish Gypsies.:incazzato:

I have had death threats from them too a few years ago, dead animals being dumped in my drive, late night phone calls etc. All the police could say when i reported it was 'Mate you have got problems now' thats all they did. This guy is now locked up and is not liked by the travellers in my area. The guys father came to see me and said i would not have anymore trouble. And too this day i have not. Bloody scary i can tell you these people are not to be messed with. And the Police seem to be scared of them!!

I have no personal experience working for a gyspy family, but my middle lad did some bricklaying for a local gypsy family and very quickly found that things get very threatening and "heavy" when time for payment.

I actually find the worst payers are "anyone to do with the building industry" yet I have never had a domestic customer fail to pay.

The only times Ive had trouble with payment is from other tilers ive worked with, its happened twice!

Surely we've all had bad payers outside of ethnic groups and do they not get a mention.
I've had many a drive laid and roof tile fixed for under a £5000 without the threat of death.
Mind you they did escort the elderly next door neighbour to the cashpoint for her life savings - such thoughtful people!.

Yes, I remember it, too... had hoped it got sorted! 🙁

We had some gipsies in the field next to us a while back and it does seem to depend each year which lot it is - the years before they looked more traditional, less wealthy, less mercs, more horses and were really quiet, kept themselves to the oppopsite side of the field and really, it felt kind of cosy and old fashioned. this last lot were shocking and upset everybody, used the footpath along the field down to the beach as a toilet, had really noisey generators going all night long, kids were climbing and damaging the trees effing and blinding at my next door neighbour who lives right by the fence, then at night when we took the cat for a walk round the clifftop, we heard this car or small van crash into the fence of the playground towards the beach, and guess where the fence was the next day, it had gone, they obviously helped themselves. Wealthy lot, different to the others, seriously posh cars and very smart caravans and left the place in absolute filth.

Seems there are differences within them, too, like the rest of us, but it all just made everybody really tense. The other next door neighbour said the kids climbed into his and his neighbours garden, stuff like that is just really scary. People can choose to be decent whoever they are, all behaviour is a choice.

a m8 of a m8 got asked to price to fit a kitchen in a very big and nice house he did all the design and got back to the chap with a price of 25k. how much will you knock off for cash the chap asked so they sorted a cash price and the chap gave the kitchen fitter 5k in cash up front the kitchen fitter did the job and got my m8 to do the tiling. on the day he was finishing just silly bits and bobs he took the chap the bill but it was a different chap that came to the door it was a small fat pikey he asked to see the other chap but the pikey said i have sacked him. the kitchen fitter is now completely confused. the pikey explained that the other chap was his builder but he was not happy with the work he was doing so he sacked him. as soon as the kitchen fitter gave the pikey the bill he started shouting that the kitchen was cheep rubbish and he was not going to pay him. the kitchen fitter was asking him to show him the parts that he was not happy with. the pikeys two sons (built like a barn door) came in the kitchen and started chasing him around saying they wanted there 5k back or they were going to come round his house. at this point he would have given them 5k just to let him go. he got out of there but he was receiving threatening calls for a month or so after. so no i do not work for them.* * * * *

I havent had any bad experiences working for travellers as I have never been asked to do anything by them but some one I know uses a traveller to collect unpaid bills for him ,when he was owed money by another traveller he called his friend who in turn called the debtor and the money was delivered within the hour,I guess its a case of its who knows who,
My dad keeps birds and he often buys and sells them with the travellers he never has any problem but he is Irish so I guess they may think he is one too LOL

I'm Irish and like travelling but I'm no gypsy, lol.
Live in my own house too, sold my two horses so I look ok now, lol.
I know a guy who drives a transit with two white stripes on the bonnet, the travellers all blow their horns at him. I laughed when he told me this.
They come into areas here and are well spotted, leave nothing about or it'll walk.
