Bitumen on floor

Hi Guys,

After pulling up lino of the floor, this also pulled up the vinyle tiles, leaving bitumen. Bitumen is non tacky, hence they came up with ease. I have heard the words "PCI Primer on here". Am I right in thinking that I can prime over the floor and bitumen and lay tiles as normal. The floor is concrete.

Any help appreciated.

That is probably just a bitumen adhesive... clean the floor and prime with suitable a primer and it will be ok...

Can I prime with Bal APD or SBR as I already have both. I am assuming I can use normal rapid set to tile, is that ok?

Hello from Germany to Shaun. Before starting tile works check if Bitumen is now in the UK regarded to be a hazardous stuff for human. In former times this wasn´t a question but now it is. So, maybe you have to get it out first, otherwise your client may say you didn´t pay attention and didn´t show him the possible danger that can occur by the bitumen ground under his new tiles. In Germany Bitumen is a problem waste stuff and needs a special waste disposal. Wouldn´t it be the same in the UK?

Martin...over here there is no problem with bitumen, what Shaun is referring to is infact asphalt...non hazardous.You will find German laws are far more strict than here,bitumen was used years ago to fix plastic tiles internally....this has been been superceeded by acrylic adhesives,and the old bitumen only smells when warmed up to apply....Gaz

Hello Gaz. Thanx for your advise. I confirm this is the same in Germany, talking about asphalt this is not a problem and a typical, but not loved, ground for tiles. One of our client just finished a supermarket, which was extended and asphalt with sand surface was the ground. Both, the tile layer and the asphalt maker, had to obey a traffic load of 1000 kg/m2 acc. to contract conditions. Therfore the asphalt was a special and very dense and the tiles were laid thin set buttering floating. Regards.

Usually large contractors tend to favour concrete bases,vibrated concrete tiled over with solid bed,and expansion pieces at regular intervals.Asphalt is used mainly to tank out ( as damp proof memmbrane) in cellars etc. Concrete is far cheaper to buy than asphalt...so for surfacing floors it is in decline.....Gaz

Then the tilers had 1 week to tile the active part (620 m2) and afterwards, after 3 weeks all in all, the market started business again. It was a tough time for my client but evrything went well.

That makes perfect sense...the asphalt is ready to tile on within hours,concrete takes weeks.BAL do make also a green screed compound for concrete not yet set,this seems to be used also on larger contracts .....Gaz
