Went to look at a job today, 9m2 on a balcony. Now, as usual, theres a question!!!

The house is around 5 years old. The balcony currently has terracotta tiles on which a roofer has painted with some sort of black stuff as they had a leek. Would the black stuff be bituman, and if so, can I tile over it? The owner does not want the whole floor dug up, and to be honest I wouldn't know where to begin.

He has bought wickes interior/exterior addy. Thanks.

I would say Fred if you do the job to limit any guarrentee firmly. Tiling of the already proven faulty roof work is not going to 'fix' any problems - that is what a lot of customers will think the tiles will do.

see grumpy as he uses an acryilic primer i "think" thats suitable for use over bitumen

I'm a little warey of doing it for that reason. Also, the house name is 'The Palace', in a private road, boasts 8 bedrooms all with on-suite, 2 kitchens, in door pool, 4 lounges, a garage I could put my property into..............so if I did mess up............:yikes:

they should be willing to pay the money to fix it since it's called the palace!they don't sound skint so charge them a fair price!

he's an accountant! your the tiler mate, you tell him how long it will take and how much it costs and if he doesn't like it forget about it! he's probably only guessing that it's a day job in a attempt to keep your price down!

Fred - to be honest if the house is 5 years old and has a roof problem thats a build issue so in any case should come under NHBC guarrentee shouldnt it? If it looks like a slap on remedy has been tried already and failed - its trouble. If you need the job carry on but really tell him its not likely to solve anything in writing to keep your self out of trouble. And 'a day job'... trouble methinks

Walk away Fred.

If you tile on top of the mess that is already causing trouble...........your'll be the one he phones when it all goes belly up. :mad2::mad2:

Thanks you last 3 posters. I was thinking if it already has problems, and they've already had some roofer in to bituman over it, and the damage to one lounge....in the thousands...............I'll miss this one.....cheers..............
