Spent an hour today scrapping these plastic protection things of the wall tiles before grouting , just wondering does anyone charge for this extra work? I didn't know what tiles the lady had picked before pricing the job, but at the same time I would have felt bad ,charging her for scrapping them off!

I wouldn't charge for that mate.

Job I've just done though - complete bathroom refit; customer insisted I put new bath in before I ripped the old shower and tray out. Meant I had to tile part of the floor (free standing bath) grout and Silicon only to spend another day and a half grouting and siliconing again when I finished.

Are these the little squiggles of plastic for protection? I use an old credit card. Any pics?

My hoover's full of 'em

part of the job at times, give them an estimate and if it takes you an extra hour you could of course add it on.....each to there own

Well if you are self-employed and on a price then it is right you are payed for scraping them off ! if you are on a day rate it is payed for as it is in your day ! but to list it in a bill would seem petty lol.........

yep, part and parcel of the job, bit like washing tools, loading/unloading tools etc.

I know I could never charge for this extra work , coz as some of you's said its petty ! just having a moan as the past 4 bathrooms have been similar tiles, I usually use an ice scraper to remove them but these ones had to be removed with the floor scraper!

I unpack several boxes at a time and de wax them before i use them, it's way easier than doing it when they are on the wall and they get everywhere when you try and remove them.

Any stubborn ones i leave on till the end, by that time they have been saturated and will usually fall off naturally

I know exactly where you're coming from.. I've had this a couple of times. One kitchen splashback took longer to get those bits off, than it took to tile the thing!?! If i remember correctly, they came off easier (marginally) after grouting. 😉

Ive tiled a few kitchens with black beveled brick tiles and they have two 1" wide chalk marks on each end, a right pain in the rear

same as bugs, just open a few boxs and scrape them off, keeps the mess in one place, i use a scraper that you fit stanley blades in, they seem to do the trick..

I don't charge for this. They can be stubborn at times but part & parcel of the job. The thing that can be a nightmare though is the glue from when they seal the cardboard over the boxes & it goes onto the face of the tile. I use the same as Andy. Comes of pretty quick with the wee Stanley scrapers.
