Hi All

first message so please bear with me.

I have a terracotta tiled hearth the paint that has been used before is cracked and coming of the tiles. Is there a paint I can use that will stay on the tiles and put up with heat coming from the log burner standing on them?

Hi there,
you can get the red step/windowsill paint that is used on teracotta, I am not sure about its heat withstanding capabilities, most major diy stockists will have it, I would also try a decorators centre, they have specialised knowledge of all paints available.

good luck.

Lyz – I don’t think you are looking at paint! Go and speak to a stove / log burning centre or specialist who have Hetas qualified fitters (they have seen your situation a million times and know what works). There’s old traditional methods that have worked for yonks and people like LTP and Lithofin who will sell you their own snake oil. I think you are looking at rubbing in linseed oil then polishing. If you are in Hampshire or near the New Forest then pls PM me and I’ll put you in touch with a decent log burning centre who will advise. (paint people like the Dulux Centre don’t sell what you need, I’m pretty sure of that). Stan

they do stan if its paint she is after, some people mix up quarries and terracotta, easy if your not in the trade. Quarries were painted years ago and if that is what is on her tiles then johnsons do a paint for it. If they have been waxed and sealed then fair enough, Lithofin it is

thanks every one for your ideas. I will try and find a local fire/log burner agent and take them a sample of the tiles.

I used Heat Sheild paint (can't remember the manufacturer but will fins out) on my slate fireplace. Really high gloss black - look fab and stands the heat of a real fire. They do it in white, red (terracotta) and black as far as I know. Got it from Focus of all places.
