Hello
On the verge of doing my first tiling ever with no supervision (what could possibly
go wrong)??

Someone said I'd need to PVA the wall first - is this so? Never heard of it... do I just get it from B&Q? Does tile adhesive stick to it alright?

Also - I'm going to Amtico my slightly bouncy kitchen floor - I want to seal the floor under the units in case of flooding/prevent damage to wooden floor) = will PVA do that?

Nooooo!!!!!! PVA has no place in tiling. What is the finish on the walls now? If you need to seal them with anything use the correct primer, it's normal practice to use the primer from the same manufacturer as your adhesive.

PVA, IMHO, wouldn't help under the kitchen units either.

Definitely no pva....... there is a long thread on here somewhere telling you all about it. Who ever told you to use it do not listen to or follow any more of the advise given by them.

Gosh - glad I checked! A plasterer told me to do it...
Stripping old paint off to the plaster board and in shower it will be tanked (BAL) over plaster board.
Trying to learn everything off youtube....

PVA or Poly Vinyl Acetate breaks down when placed in alkaline conditions. Plaster is alkaline as is plasterboard so it would be like putting it in an alkaline sandwich. It would last for a short while but then would eventually begin to fail and the plaster would fall off the wall. I have some good examples of this in my current house which is under renovation. use a good quality acrylic primer.

OK. Can't I just tile the wall?
I'll have primer in my tanking kit - should I do the whole bathroom with it if there is enough? I want to protect the platserboard near the bathroom/kitchen sinks.

I'd tell you but its not here (the project is elsewhere and it's there). I got it on freecycle from a very nice couple - I'll check its good stuff beore I start using it.

Just go to your local place and get something reputable like tilemaster adhesive and a tilemaster tanking kit, the whole room needs priming with a diluted primer. Don't use any ready mixed bucket adhesive.
