Hi All

So around 10 years ago (i had no idea it was that long ago until i looked up the order for the supplies) i tiled my kitchen floor. It went something like this:

Removed existing tiles. They were vinyl type tiles stuck on with a black bitumen (from what i could tell) https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/.

Mapei eco prim grip over the remaining bitumen https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/.

I used a fast set flexible https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ to stick 6mm marmox boards to the concrete floor.

Fit underfloor heating mat.

Apply self levelling compound over the mat. This didnt quite go to plan, the mat "floated" a bit in the compound leaving high spots, and it seems the hole house in on the wonk, so i ended up with a bigger "step" at one end of the kitchen than the other.

Finally, tiled on the top. There are a few slightly high tiles, due to the floaty mat, but its been fine for the last decade.

So now im about to tile the hallway. We have had a couple of kids, hence the delay.

So i have the same bitumen https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ residue on the concrete floor, and i have to get the tiles to meet the big step on the kitchen tiles. I had figured id do the following:

Eco prim grip on the floor

some 12mm cement boards On top. This would help smooth out the floor a bit as ive removed a wall and a gas meter, and would help bring the floor level up a bit closer to meet the kitchen tiles.

I had thought id use some slow set tile https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ for this. I work really slowly, so using fast set stuff, its forever going off in the bucket so i spend as much time cleaning out the bucket and mixing up new stuff, than i do actually tile.

Then tile on top of the boards.

Does this sound like a reasonable plan? I could use some fast setting https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ for the boards as i could get them all cut out in advance, then mix the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ and lay them all at once.

Any recommendations for the tile https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/?

Sorry for the mega long post, hopefully some of you got to the end.

Thanks

All sounds good to me.
may need a bit of self levelling where the old and new meet
but sounds fine.
I use weber products myself. always use flexabal https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ and grout.

Thanks.

Even at 12mm, the new will be lower than the old. I could use a bit of self levelling, but could i just be a bit generous with the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ under the boards and under the tiles? Just to blend it in a bit?

Ok, trying to source the materials needed for this.

I'm thinking 10mm/12mm square notched for the tiles on the boards? the tiles are 300x300.
What size trowel for the cement boards on the concrete floor? Ive seen 6mm notch recommended, but that seems a bit small?

Also, in terms of https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ near me, local buliding place has these: NOTE, i'm looking for standard set, rather than rapid set, which rules out most options. - EDIT, i think maybe i'll go for rapid set for the boards, as i should be able to get them down pretty quickly.

236962 INSTARMAC Ultratile Proflex S1 SPES 20kg Grey (Pink Bag)
280516 DUNLOP CX-24 20kg Essential Tile https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ Grey 37934

There is a Jewson nearby that has this:

Weber Fix Plus Tile https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ 20kg Grey (the white version is ÂŁ10 a bag more!)

Wickes has this:

mapei standard set plus ceramic & porcelain tile https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ white 20kg

B&Q has a right random bunch of stuff.

price wise, its all close enough to not make much difference in the scheme of things.

Or is there something else you'd recommend that is easy enough to get anywhere?

Thanks

I have the tile https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ and the boards now, i just need to pickup a trowel or two.

I have an R10 trowel, that is curved rather than square... i cant remember if i used this on the floor in the kitchen, or the wall tiles in the bathroom. Is it suitable for the hardie boards or the 300x300mm tiles?

Thanks

6mm for the boards 8/10 mm for the tiles. spread the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ on the floor and with the flat side of the trowel
a skim of https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ on the back of the tile

Thanks

According to rubi, a 10mm u notched trowel should give about a 3mm bed, same as a 6mm notched. So ill use that for the boards, and grab an 8 or 10 square for the tiles.

Thanks again.
