Neil has worked with me for two years then decided he wanted to go into the army, he lasted 9 months and was out. He called me after a week.
He walked off the job today because I dont pay him enough....he comes out with £220 a week, he is 20. I know we work some long days but we also finish early sometimes, I regularly buy him breakfast and let him use the van all the time............cant believe it!

He rang an hour ago and said he wants £350 per week.....I told him to get stuffed, then his Mum rang and said he was upset and he wished he had not walked of the job and could I take him back?

I said no......was I right because I feel as though I am.

:mad2:

you're paying him more than the minimum wage already. if you need him offer him the next level of min wage that he would get when he hits 21, and see if he takes it. it's only £17 a week more than what you're paying him now (based on a 40 hour week).

but if you don't think you need him, let him walk. no point having baggage.

chances are that if you took him back he'd still be aggrieved at what he sees as a raw deal. You'll not get the best from him in that case.

neil needs to grow up dom imo, how many 20 year olds just now have apprenticeships that pay 14.5 k a year and get to use the van and get bacon butties from there gaffers every day? not many,if he had a dispute he should have aproached you and discussed it not walk off the job your quite right

i have to agree..if he is a valuable part of your company then offer a pay rise.....if on the other hand he isnt then dont as to me the way he has acted means that he may well leave you in the lurch at some point.

Stand your ground, a tantrum, walking off site leaving you in the poo a man down rewarded by a £70 pay rise, - what sort of message does that send him, throw another tantrum next week and another £70 pay rise because you did it this week?

If he does it 5 times he'll have his £350 a week.

If he had come to you and negotiated a pay rise then fair enough.

Maybe take him back but tell him times are hard, credit crunch and all that, and your going to have to cut his pay to keep him.

i don't blame you Dom , i would be the same, there is a reccesion on at the mo!! what do they want :yikes:, i once had a lad's MUM  ask ME if i would stand guarantor for him to buy a car :lol::lol: no that's your job love i say's, you could not make it up

I got back to the job and he had disappeared, Rang him loads of times but no answer. He left mixed addy that had set, my cutters were just left for anyone to pinch, he is such a good worker, I dont understand why someone would just do one??

all i will say did he make your life any easier as you have invested 2years into him , is that £220.00 take home ,
we all know what we where like when we where 20 dont we :mad2:

Yes I do Liz...........£27.50 per week and never a day off.

I think its his new girlfriend to be honest, she is 30 with 3 children from 3 different fathers and she wears the boots and trousers and hat. After seeing her for the first time she would never get a job in Gooners Carlsberg thread. "MOOOOO!!!"

does his Mum know about the new gf? let him be jobless supporting her and kids then. maybe he'll understand then that £220 a week is better than nowt.

Dom, in this day and age I have had lads offering to pay me to let them work with me. Not that I would take advantage, but how many lads out there would give anything to learn a highly skilled trade. We all know the rates a well respected tiler can command, we all started on poor pay.

Never had a problem Dave but he does need a shove now and again, he can tile a little, he can grout and he keeps the tools clean but why walk?
He has been put up to it by the new missus, they are over £1000 in rent arrears and have other debts that are really hers. I might call him tomorrow and arrange to see him away from her. His Mum just called and she is in bits saying its all down to his girlfriend, but how do you explain that to him??

:incazzato:

Dom is this before tax of after?

I do have to say that is quite a low wage, I pay my labourers more than that, or is he a labourer? I know we are other ends than the country so it may be different

If he's worth more than £220 a week to you then get him back, or would you rather spend 2 years training someone else? If you are still carrying him after 2 years and he costs you money then let him go

£350 for a second year apprentice is quite a nice sum. Was just about getting £200 in my final year.

As my old boss said when I enquired about a pay rise, "No son, if I give you one now then you'll not appreciate it next year".

That is a so familiar story Dom. My nephew had a good mechanics job, met a girl as above, she wanted him at home for fetching and carrying and the stupid lovesick idiot with first legover snydrome got the sack! They split up. He is now a traffic warden and she now has five kids, all different races!

I haven't read all the posts coz I'm on a time thing here atm,my view, if he's worth it to you, and if you make money from his employ, then yes, you could pay him his 'worth' if on the other hand he isn't making you more than his wage, then he's costing you money.

Sorry that was brief.

most training costs you money the 1st year, 2nd year to will break even , 3rd year you should make a profit , 4th to 5th year you will make good profit , if you can keep hold of them , so thats why i said you have in put in 2 years dont waste it if you can sort it out , if you want too ,

why is there always a woman to blame?😳
Joking......
Seriously though he should not have walked off the job,he could have talked to you before hand.
Only you know Dom how valuable he really is.

screw him mate,if he was working his backside off then it's up to you how much he gets paid,if he was doing as much as yousrself my opinion is he was underpaid but only you know what he deserved on comparison to work.for the petty little hissy-fit no chance ,you dont mess in your own nest!

Have only skimmed over previous posts so apologies if I'm repeating what's already been said.

Agree with others that if he's a good worker he's worth the money but on the flip side do you have any grief from him? Timekeeping. work quality, manners etc? Are you hacked off because he stitched you up or because you've lost a good 'un?

Sounds to me like he's had a barny with the new missus and is on a downer. Personally if he was any good I'd be buying him a beer and negotiating a compromise? i.e tiered pay rises, bonuses, performance related pay or some sort of other incentives that don't actually mean giving a weekly payrise (e.g a £100 a month good work bonus is better for you than giving a £40 pw payrise)

....And if he's only borderline then it gives you the opportunity to get someone else in.....
