Mapei adhesive - Mixing!

For anyone that is new to using Mapei adehesives, just a small word of caution regarding mixing instructions. The instructions on the bags of grey Keraflex Maxi and Keraquick regarding water quantities are incorrect. Always check out the Mapei Data Sheets for the correct quantities otherwise the mix is soooo thick!!!!

i agree with dave,start with a little water and find my own consistency,floors are stiffer than walls etc

So do I Dave but when I use an adhesive for the first time I always try to mix per instructions to see how it should be according to the manufacturer and adjust to my own "taste". In Mapie's case the instructions on the bag are not the same as the data sheets. Just thought it would be good to let peeps know!

Having said that, I find the Keraflex Maxi if mixed as per the data sheet quantities is spot on.

experience knows when its to the right consistincey! you can't have it too thick ! and def let sit and remix after a few minutes(gives the back and knees a rest too)

Should cement addy be mixed til it's stiff enough to not slip (like a good tubbed addy)? I've only used it on walls once (in a shower), and found it very slippy. It was nice to spread, but i figured i'd mixed it a little too wet... 😳

You could be right there being to wet, it should be able to have some body but not to stiff.

I know when Darren (at NETT) showed us the pci nanolite addy, it was really light, and he had no slippage at all with a 400x400 stone tile, but wasn't sure if i should expect the same grip with every spf, as a bathromm fitter i know refuses to use it on walls as there's too much slippage!?! Thought maybe he's mixing it too wet as well lol!

Maybe i should start using my mixer.. I've got kinda used to mixing everything by hand, but i'm thinking maybe that's the reason i'm not getting it stiff enough. It feels stiff when i'm mixing it, but once i start troweling, i realise it's not that stiff at all!?! :lol:

must be a misprint on the bags there - normally they are spot on with their printed bag instructions. one thing you will always find makes good adhesive-best! is to always mix it a little wet and then let it stand ( slake ) for about 10 minutes and the mix it again until you acheive the final consistancy your happy with. this will make it even nicer to use reduce slip & slump and improve pot life etc.

also if you do use an electric mixer, mix at around 350/400 rpm otherwise you might just whip it to cream & lock in small air bubble that make it weaker when set.
