How to use paper as a guide?

Yes I`m a newbie!! I`ve seen a profile gauge in use and at the time thought it looked a great tool but having read the reviews here it would appear to be a load of C**P to most pro`s! Using paper to mark out around toilet bowls etc seems to be popular but can someone describe to me exactly how this is done?:huh2:

Hi mate....

Firstly always persuade the customer if possible to have the toilet removed. Makes for a neater job & easler for you.
Also look on Karl Dahm website or order catalogue - great range of profiling tools - only the best from Karl Dahn.
Otherwise try Axminster tools, they do a great Flexible ruler around 60 cm long, only around a fiver including p & p.
