My mum had the V40 1.8i and I remember it to be very thirsty although it was an automatic so maybe worth keeping an eye on that. She gave it up when she turned 80

I've put £20 worth of petrol in on Saturday, and so far I've managed to do about 65 miles. It's getting closer to the red though. Thankfully what more I have to spend on petrol over diesel is far outweighed by the fact I'm only spending half my monthly car budget than I was when I had the Corsa. so a bit of a win win, and even bigger win when the Volvo won't move for 6 months due to maternity leave

And as its a Volvo it will probably start if you left it for 6 months too

well wouldn't you know it, I've had it a week and now I can hear something that doesn't sound right, and there's a horrible smell from the rear right side brakes/wheel. took the car to kwik fit, and they've inspected the rear brakes, and they're well worn, metal to metal, need replacing asap. now I need to figure out if it should have passed it's MOT 2 weeks ago with rear brakes that are worn out. not sure what the sound is in the engine. it's only come on since the petrol warning light came on today. I hate buying second hand cars :mad2:

Not nice... you didn't you get a warranty from the garage where you bought it? I got a year's worth with mine...

Is there any kind of warranty with it Grr ? It could have passed an mot as the test is on brake effectiveness to stop.

yes G I did, 3 months. I just need to find out if the garage that sold me the car did me over and knew the brakes were in need of replacement. I'll report back when I find out.

Don't think the warranty will cover brakes.... You'll have to get them on selling a defective car.

Just have everything fixed then in those 3 months... shouldn't cost you anything...

I don't think brakes will be covered G as they are classed as normal wear and tear items, rather than mechanical or electrical breakdown or failure. and as stewart says, the MOT may not have identified worn out brakes.

I've had to do that before. and this is why I hate buying second hand cars 🙁

but what leg will I have to stand on? could the garage argue that I should have checked the car more thoroughly before buying it?

Ah, I see, hmmm... seems nonsensical not to cover them if they are duff after just a few days.... good luck with it then!

If the brakes were down to the metal, then that's unsafe, so I think you could pull them up for this. Did they say the car had been serviced, if so, then it should have been picked up.

If theres metal on metal now,on the MOT they should have put worn brakes on an advisery notice.

thanks Del. I'm gonna ring the garage on Monday and ask for a copy of the checklist they used and what the brake efficiency result was. apparently, after doing some internet research, for it to be a pass, it has to achieve at least 25% brake efficiency.

I just bought a 2003 Ford Lightning SVT,it's pretty sweet, but my advice would be to never offer sticker price, always offer them something lower,I offered 3,000$ lower than the sticker price and they accepted it,that payed for my taxes and stuff but either way 3,000$ is a lot of thinset, good luck

Do you have an advisory notice (its yellow VT32) with your mot cert.If you dont, they are saying that nothing is very worn/deteriorated/close to legal limit.not just for brakes but for the whole car. worn tyre/wipers/handbrake cable..etc.

I didn't get any else from the car dealer other than the MOT cert itself Del. So I have no idea if the car has any advisories on it. I'll ring the dealer tomorrow and ask the question. I'll casually drop into the conversation that the brakes have been visually inspected and are worn out. I'll let the dealer sweat a bit.
