just a thought been happening last 4 years or so young people today want everything new seems they must have the new big house new car new bigscreen tv new eveything does make you wonder as when i was starting out seemed everything was second hand or handed down

this sort of thing is the norm over here what the story over there:8:

Just the same here. I find the new generation of kids want too much too soon. My Last Mature apprentice (24 years old) Went bankrupt the first year he qualified after buying too big a house and car, and spending money he didn't have. I ended up having to pay 70% of his wages direct to The debt collectors for a year before he quit.

My step son (10) wants everything new. He doesnt get it and nor do my other 2 boys. I buy them second hand toys off Ebay and they know no different.

My other half has always had brand new houses until we moved in together and bought our bungalow, now i have ripped the roof off and created a layer of dust evreywhere im begining to think a new house isnt such a bad idea

its half the reason we have such a bad debt problem in this country jay.people dont want 2nd hand anymore, ive tried selling off things on ebay and also car bootys and it just doesnt go as quick or for decent prices anymore compared to what it used to,,defo a throwaway society we have now:thumbsdown: the thing is the more better technology gets everyone wants the most up to date things its a bit of a no win situ

Hi Jay - not mine - both had to work for what they've got and that way they appreciate the end result!
I'am sure that the 'problem' exists in many areas as the credit era has given the I want attitude to all ages, but if you've been through tough times in the past you don't want to go there again.
We all spoil our kids to a certain degree so who is to blame?

see it a lot over here your working on site for builder then the appliances turn up then owners young couple new car you just wonder what your doing wrong cause you cant afford what they have :mad2:

Mostly on credit mate, IMO don't do it, it's a slippery slope:thumbsdown:

We have a saying over here Jay, i have to edit it though

2 nice cars on the drive but .... all in the fridge!

Im sure we can all go and get stuff on finance but we have the sense to see that we can always afford to pay it back.

im the credit card companys worst customer....... i pay it in full every month.

as tj said if youv'e been through tough times you dont want to go there again

New this and new that, not when I was a kid the money was'nt there neither was the credit cards.

I have one daughter and get phone calls "Dad" I need, renting a property with the boyfriend and there living hand to mouth, no savings whatsoever.....

Some just don't seem to live in the same finacial world as me.

At least the top half of the house is new

i have a stepson who is 23 just brought himself a 05 car cash has credit cards pays them off every month but still live at home lol

i grew-up on a council est, then when i started swimming pool's and see the wealth that some folk's have, i just could not believe they had so much, when i did not but over the year's i have seen it change , with a lot of NEW Money, and of course my own wealth has gone-up and now i live in my own house on a private est, but people are in to much of a rush to have/do everthing !! we all need to pace it a bit slower IMO

I think most of us was brought up on council estates but then I'm going back to the 50s but there was allways an estate that was private....

That where the money was then, more people have wealth now than when I was brought up

I've noticed a big difference in parent's attitudes in that they feel like failures if they don't give their kids luxuries. Friends of my wife went into debt in order to buy their 17 year old son a decent car as if it was his right of passage and paid his insurance which was over £2K....he wrote it off within two months and they got him another one.

I was brought up on a council estate, massive one that consisted of 8 houses:lol: 3 miles from kendal. We were all in and out of each others houses borrowing a bit of this and a bit of that, it was great in that it created a good community spirit 'cos we were all in the same boat and depended on each other:thumbsup:

come on beam even the rich were poor in hemel where i lived anyway

When we got engaged we lived of my wages and put enerything my fiancee earned into the building society for a deposit on a house and we struggled to get a mortgage. Eventually got one from the council because I had a steady job with the post office but had to take it over 35 years

Our wedding present from my parents was to pay the solicitors fees and a new bed. The few bits of furniture we had were either family hand-ons or bought second hand. The cooker cost us £5 and my dad and I spent a weekend taking it apart and decoking it with caustic soda. We didn't even have a TV

Mind you we had some flash wheels. I had my Dad's 8 year old Morris 1000 that I bought for what they offered him on a trade in and my wife had a BSA Bantam to get the 10 miles across town to work.

Today its a different story!

we were bought up on a council estate too and we were far from rich! when i was in secondary school one day a girl i really fancied said to me ' i see you've got ur new shoes on' i replied 'what do you mean?' she then said 'i sold them to your mam last night in the school jumble sale' ...... i could've died

Steady there, boys. You're beginning to sound like the Mony Python Yorkshiremen sketch

That's true it's hard to explain to your children why other's have and they don't. And of course you want to give them everything which makes them happy. But there is a line and as a parents we should sense it.
