I looked at a job a month ago, a wet room i got the job and told the women it would be three weeks before i could start. I took a £50 deposit as a booking fee. anyway i got all the gear tanking kit etc from Topps rang her today to tell her i was going to start tomorrow, she told me her friends husband had done it and didn't need me now:furious3: and guess what she wants her deposit back, i explained this is what the deposit is for to stop people doing this sort of thing.:joker: Also i took the tanking gear back to Topps Tiles as it was £450.00 and they refunded my money, Thanks TOPPS

I have always thought that Topps Tiles were rip off merchants with their prices !!
Now I know it's true - £450 for a tanking kit !!!! Bloody hell
He He:lol:
By the way, I never ask for a deposit, just doesn't seem right.

Had similar two weeks ago.

I turned up on the Monday morning..........."Oh she said.....I thought you where going to phone" :mad2:

She did'nt have the tiles.

Can you come back tomorrow.........."Well, as I don't have anything on for a few days because of this.......I spose I can"

Anyway......I turned up on the Tuesday.........only to be asked in by the woman.

I have a confession she said.

She had only had part of the tiling done by a builder doing other work on her house..........but he had made a right arse of it. (Good)

Could I, take up wot he done and re-do it.

I turned around and walked away without saying a word.

Quite right CJ nice composure, be very tempting to raise 2 fingers as thats what
shes basically tried on you....! other option would be maybe to accept on an increased price...

She did say as I was walking away........she'll phone me.

Don't really expect her to phone.........and I'm busy for at least the next 3 months

Am i tooo soft..........I don't think I have ever really lost it with a punter. Not really the thing to do

Just to explain the tanking kit was the matting type, best price i could get was from Topps, all the other tile suppliers were alot more expensive.

Hi why not tell her you'll take the job on but the price has just went up.
Make it worth your while teach her a lesson.
If she agrees to the new price great if not you walk away either way you teach her not to try cut corners or get things done on the cheap

One 1 occasion a customer failed to be at the house when I was due to finish...lost 1 days work and billed them for it..ended up in snooker hall all day.To those types of customer .....

If im getting the tiles for a customer I get full payment from them before I get the tiles, and if it's a big job with quite a lot of materials I also get full payment for that before hand aswell.

But as for a booking deposit, then no, not yet.

I havn't worked atall this week because of a customer, wouldn't mind but have turned loads of work down as i was fully booked.
Quoted last month and all was happy, told him floor needed plying to which he replied he would do it himself, no probs i said. Had an old sink and toilet in there which he said were going to be removed for when i started. Had big chunky skirting boards on which he said would be staing on, once again no probs. Wanted 60 x 30 travertine laying horizontal one above the other NOT brick pattern, No prob.

Turned up for the job walked in and there is a nice brand new sink, toilet and rad fitted and 4 sheets of ply propped up against the wall. Asked whats going on and he said it was the only time the plumber could get in and do it and he also didn't have time to put the ply down. Told him for laying the ply and taking out the toilet it would be extra cash, which he finally agreed to. Then looked down and seen the skirtings had been also ripped off leaving huge holes in the walls, just shook my head but grabbed the tools out ready to start.

Customer then came up with a cup of coffee for me while i was priming the walls
"me and the wife have had a chat and decided me want it in a brick pattern afterall and we also have some mosaics we want the shower area doing in and for it to also run around the room as a border." Took a deep breath..
After once again sorting the price out took another deep breath and carried on.

trotted downstairs to get something else out of the van and heard him saying to his mrs "this is getting expensive now i am not even sure if we have enough to pay for it"

Tools packed, honk of the horn "see you later pal"

Gaz i had one like that sort of can you leave it tomorrowas i have to go out and come back the following day i said just go and look at my diary in the van came back a few mins later and said my next avalible day was in three months time she soon changed her mind and left me on my own to finish:yes:

On occasions like this bri, tell her that the next thing coming through her letterbox is a gallon of petrol followed by a zippo:lol: Was that the snooty *******s from the briggs who bought the cheapo clearance porcelain by any chance?:mad2:

grrrrrr some people dont seem to realise that yeah doing it for a living

although doesnt do to many domestic jobs

:ninja:

I've been reading all these deposit style threads with great interest. I'm going to issue contracts from [DLMURL]http://www.clickdocs.co.uk[/DLMURL] When u see the specific contract for tiling you may think its a bit of an overkill. But it could save you the £450 if you couldn't get it back from TOPPS. too many guys here have lot out because people have decided to get someone else(cheaper?) to do the job and treated them badly. If they get a contract to sign they'll have to decide on tiles, patterns, borders etc. At least I'll know that I'll be doing the jobs once contract is signed.
