Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

Ooh it's been a while since this was last discussed, I'm just popping out for some popcorn, back soon 🙂 🙂

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

Bunch of clowns! The correct answers are, No I don't cut down doors and plinths as part of my price as I don't own a saw, yes I take my rubbish away (that's what lay-bys are for) and Rubi 😉

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

It all takes time and I'm sure most of you are capable so I won't go in to the argument on if you should or not. I always add an hourly rate for these small parts of our job, maybe an hour or a day... Whatever it takes.

What lay-bys are for chucking your rubi in..?

And no I dont cut doors and plinths.
Im a TILER not a bloody multi trader..

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

That's a bit cowboyish? what would you do if you tiled a floor where the customer had the kitchen fitted 4 week ago ? ( ring the kitchen fitter and ask him to come back and trim 2mm of the plynths) ?? a saw is only £29.99?

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

I'm sure people are kidding when they say they don't address these small non tiling jobs on a weekly basis

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

I cut down doors and plinths, same as I cut back architraves or fit boxing-in, as I regard it as part of the job. All my jobs are priced on a day rate not a sq mtr rate.

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

Why would you be expected to plain doors and plinths?......so a chippy fits a kitchen and hes expected to tile it ? A plasterer plasters a wall so the customer expects him to tile it ?
Im a tiler. I tile.....could I do it ..yes I could. But im busy enough tiling so I leave it to the relevent trades. .

And the client is told this when quoting so its there choice......up to now most customers already say the kitchen fitter has arranged to come back when the tilings done to sort out the plinths..

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

The less you involve other trades in your work, the better. I prep all my own work and take on extra other work including joinery / plumbing. Why? Because then I can only let myself down. No wonder peoples schedules get messed around waiting on other people doing these silly little jobs.

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

No sigma rubi threads as Dave's back and he might get banned. If your busy enough then get someone else if not it's only cutting them and if your not capable of cutting plinths then I dread to see the tiling. Do whatever makes you the money you need to earn

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

Who said anything about preping jobs ?
Or plumbing?
Thought we were talking about plaining doors and plinths

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

If I was a kitchen fitter who had to wait on on tiler tiling floor before I went back to fit plinths I'd be inclined to just tile the floor myself.

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

Lol....or he could just cut them down before he finishes....simples..

Yes, most of the time he could. Q: do you ply your own floors, sheet your walls if required, remove old floor boards or reinforce old joists? Or build stud wall...Or do you just tile?

Yes I prep jobs ..... but if someones just had a 10 grand kitchen fitted I aint plaining bits off it lol..

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

I've finished mine, I've found a tube of Pringles in the cupboard though, so carry on 😉

I've some Twiglets left from Christmas, not as crunchy but will do zee trick!! [emoji23][emoji23]

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

Why leave yourself open to more reasons for them not to pay you!
As Andy said damage a plinth on a £10k kitchen, it could be £800 from BQ without the plastic cover trim or a £35k hand painted one; in which case they would let you near a saw ( even at £29.99 ). And have you seen the cost of some of these doors?
For me I'd charge for any joinery preparation work that's going to be covered by tiling, but 2nd/ finishing joinery is done by others.

Re: Cutting Plyths & Doors.

I try and avoid the woodwork stuff, unless they are only having tiling done, if its numerous doors / plinths etc. thresholds for height issues, I'd quote for it, and get a chippy in, too stressful, dealing with solid oak doors, we do tiles, chippies do wood.... and even cheap doors can be a nightmare, as no wood left on the bottom of the door to plane off ! if hardibacker, UFH, Latex blah blah blah... I used to offer the full service, but now its so busy, I concentrate on the large floors, like 6-7 years ago
